Koorathazhwan, also known as Kuresa and Srivatsanka Mishra, was the chief disciple of Sri Ramanuja. He assisted Ramanuja in all his endeavors. Due to the trouble caused by a Chozha king, Ramanuja had to leave Sri Rangam for Melkote. In an argument with the Chozha King, the king got furious and ordered Koorathazhwan’s eyes to be pulled out. On hearing this, saying that he doesn't need the eyes which have seen a sinner like the king, Koorathazhwan pulled away his eyes himself and left the court furiously. Periya Nambigal had given up his life and Koorathazhwan lost his eye sight.

Sri Ramanujacharya meanwhile had moved to Melkote along with his disciples and established Vaishnavism there with the support of the local king. One time, unable to bear the separation from Ramanuja, Koorathazhwan went to the Sri Rangam temple to have the darshan of Sri Ranganatha and console himself.

Due to his anger against Sri Ramanuja, the Chozha king had decreed that people associated with Sri Ramanuja should not be allowed inside the temple. Therefore, a gatekeeper at the temple stopped Koorathazhwan from entering. Meanwhile, "Even though Koorathazhwan is associated with Sri Ramanuja, he is full of good qualities. Therefore, he can be allowed inside.", saying so, another gatekeeper asked Koorathazhwan to  go in.

Koorathazhwan, on hearing the words of the gatekeeper, replied, "I should be allowed to see the Lord because of my relationship with my acharya and not because I have good qualities. Seeing the Lord by breaking one's connection with his acharya is not required". Saying so, he refused to go inside the temple and went back. Leaving Sri Rangam, he left for Thirumalirunsolai near Madurai. Only after 12 years, after Sri Ramanuja’s return to Sri Rangam after the Chozha King’s death, Koorathazhwan returned to Sri Rangam.

Thirukkolur Ammal is asking, "Did I respect my relationship to my acharya to the extent of saying no even to Lord Sriman Narayana, like Koorathazhwan?"

As a result of the troubles from the Chozha king, Sri Ramanuja moved from Sri Rangam and went to Thirunarayanapuram and lived there many years, waiting for his day to return to Sri Rangam. The Chozha king is called "avyapadeshya" by Srivaishnava acharyas - meaning, one who is not worthy of being called by his name. He later died due to a wound in his neck and so was also referred to as "kirumi kaNdan".

Sri Ramanuja sends his disciples, every year to Sri Rangam, to know about the situation there, to make sure whether he can return to Sri Rangam. Every time, his disciples will return with bad news. One such time, Sri Ramanuja called his disciples, Maruthiyandan and Ammangi Ammal, and asked them to visit Sri Rangam and inform about Sri Ramanuja’s wellness to Kooraththazhvan and Periya Nambigal and also requested them to bring back news about the temple, Kooraththazhvan, Periya Nambigal and others. Maruthiyandan and Ammangi Ammal went to Sri Rangam and informed about Sri Ramanuja’s wellness to those there. They also heard about Periya Nambigal attaining the Lord's lotus feet and Koorathazhvan losing his eyes in an argument with the Chozha King and became very sad. At that time, they also heard about the king's death. On hearing about the King’s death, Maruthiyandan and Ammangi Ammal returned to Thirunarayanapuram immediately.

Returning to Sri Ramanuja, Maruthiyandan said "avan pOnAn", meaning that the Chozha king is dead. Hearing that, Sri Ramanuja became happy for the fact that now he can finally go back to Sri Rangam. He embraced Maruthiyandan. On hearing about Kooraththazhvan and Periya Nambigal, Sri Ramanuja was dejected and gathering all his strength, he consoled himself and returned to Sri Rangam immediately.

Thirukkolur Ammal is asking, "Did I walk a long distance and give good news to acharya like Maruthiyandan?"

Born in a small village called Viranarayana (Kattumannar Koil) near Chidambaram, Nathamunigal’s birth name was Aranganathan.  Nathamunigal was a Vaishnava theologian who collected and compiled the Nalayira Dhivya Prabhandham, which was lost for ages. Nathamunigal was a great exponent of the Ashtanga Yoga. He came to know about Nalayira Divya Prabhandam, but he heard only 10 hymns. He wanted the rest. He recited 12000 times, “Kanninun Siruthambu”, a poem in praise of Nammazhwar and meditated on Nammazhvar in Azhvar Thirunagari. Nammazhwar appeared and gave the 4000 hymns (Nalayira Divya Prabhandam). He also wrote Nyaya Tattva, Yoga Rahasya and Purusha Nirnaya, but, none of them is available today.

He saw the Lord in everything in this world. Nathamunigal can visit places while in meditation. One such day, Nathamunigal was enjoying the looks of the Lord in the beautiful Vrindhavan in deep meditation . When he came out of it, the people in his household told him that two men with a bow in hand, a woman and a monkey came to see him and left. Surprised, Nathamunigal  said -"They must be Sri Rama, Lakshmana, Sita and Hanuman!" and saying so, he started heading in the direction they went. Walking all the way lokoking for them, without any rest, Nathamunigal reached Gangai Konda Chozhapuram. Nathamunigal became extremely sad and sat in the forest with no idea on which way to proceed further. Seeing his condition, the Lord appeared in front of him and seeing the Lord, Naathamunigal was blessed and in happiness, his soul departed from his body and surrendered under the feet of the Lord.

Though at Sri Rangam Temple the utsavams will take place throughout the year, of all the festivals, the Lord enjoys four Brahmotsavam each year. It is still the prime festival for the Lord.

Ages back, there lived an ardent devotee named Idaiyarrur Nambi in Idaiyatrukudi. He would attend every Brahmotsavam from the first day and will stay there and enjoy the pleasures of the Lord till the last day of the festival. As soon as he returned home, he would be thinking of nothing but only the festival and the Lord. All he will do is, think about the Lord and wait for the next Brahmotsavam. This repeated every year.

Years passed by and due to old age, he lost his strength. One time, when he started for the Brahmotsavam, he was unable to reach Sri Rangam on the first day. Still, he tried all his best and gathered strength to reach Sri Rangam and see the lord, at any cost. Meanwhile, seeing that His devotee is not there on day one, Namperumal (the Lord of Sri Rangam) wondered "Idaiyatru Nambi has not made it to the first day of our utsavam".

Idayatru Nambi was able to be there and see the Lord only on the sixth day. Seeing him on the sixth day, Namperumal became very happy and told him "I would like to give you a boon. Ask me whatever you need." Nambi spoke gently, "Through the body You gave me, I worshipped for these many years. Now that old age has come, this body is no longer capable of travel.” Namperumal replied "If that’s so, from now on, stay here itself." (Just like he told Sri Ramanuja to stay at Srirangam - "atraiva srIrange sukhamAsva").

As Namperumal reached the next street in procession, Nambi left this world and reached His divine abode.

Thirukkolur Ammal is asking "Did I worship the Lord and think about nothing else like Idaiyarrur Nambi did and was told by Namperumal to stay at His place?"

In 1069 C.E., Swami Ramanuja left Srirangam and stayed in the Hoysala Kingdom for not less than 20 years as a result of the conflicts arising between Chola King and Sri Vaishnavam. During his stay, one night, in his dream Lord Thirunarayana appeared and said- "I am buried under an ant hill in Yadavagiri. Find me from the ground, install me in a temple."

Ramanuja took the help of the Hoysala king and retrived the idol of Tirunarayanan under an ant-hill. But, as the ancient temple was crumbled and covered with mud for years, he built a new temple for the Lord. Hoysala Bitti Deva, gave him one lakh varahas, of which 50,000 were used for construction of the temple. Bitti also stationed one of his officers in Melkote, to help the Acharya. With the temple being built and the Lord being placed as the main deity and idol, Swami Ramanujar performed thiruvaradhanam for Him for three days. While he was not able to find the utsava vigraha,, Thirunarayana appeared in his dream and told him "Our utsava murthi, Ramapriyar, is with the daughter of the Badshah at Delhi."

Ramanuja, therefore, left for Delhi. After two month long journey, he met the Badshah, blessed him and informed him that he came to know that the Badshah is having the Idol of Sri Ramapriyar and he wanted to take him back to Yadavadri as per the Lord’s command. After searching the whole palace, they came to know that Badshah's daughter was having the deity of Sri Ramapriyar. The king was surprised to hear this. The king replied-"She is very fond of the idol and I do not think she would agree to part with it. Call out the Lord's name and if the Lord comes to you on his own, you can take Him back."

Swami Ramanuja invited Him like Periyazhvar called to Krishna in his divine pasurams "sArngapANi thaLar nadai nadavAnO". ( “Oh! My Lord! My Chella piLLaay! Please come and sit on my lap!”)

On hearing the voice of Swami Ramanujar, Ramapriyar, who was on the Badshah's daughter's bed, with all His jewels blinging and anklets humming and crown shining, walked towards Ramanuja and sat in his lap. Ramanuja embraced Him and called Him "vArAy! en selvap piLLaiyE!" (Come, my dear child). Ramapriyar also embraced Ramanuja by wrapping His divine hands around his neck. From that day forward, He was called "selvap piLLai" and "yatirAja selvakumAra".

Ramanuja then returned to Yadavadri with Selva Pillai and installed Him in the temple and performed utsavams for Him.

ingu pAl pongum enREnO vaduganambiyaip pOlaE

Vaduga Nambi, born in Saligramam in Karnataka, was a very close disciple of Swami Ramanuja. His faith in his acharya was unshakable that there are many incidents where his concern for Swami Ramanuja was more than what he had for the Lord. This is known as Madhurakavi nishtai (also known as Charamopaya nishtai) - the acharya bhakti shown by Madhurakavi Azhvar toward Nammazhvar.

One time, at Sri Rangam, while Vaduga Nambi was engaged in preparing milk for Swami Ramanuja, the processional deity Lord Namperumal was being glorified by Srivaishnavas. As Namperumal came outside Ramanuja's mutt, everyone went out to have His darshan. Ramanuja was outside and noticing Vaduga Nambi's absence, he sent his disciples to ask Vaduga Nambi to come outside. Vaduga Nambi politely responded- “If I step out to see the Lord then the milk I’m preparing for Swami Ramanuja would overheat, overflow and lose its flavor. I will finish my service to my Acharya first and then I will come out to see the Lord.” Such was his acharya bhakti. Such was his devotion towards Swami Ramanuja. To Vaduga Nambi, even Lord was only next to Swami Ramanuja.

iru kaiyum vittEnO dhraupadhiyaip pOlE

In the great Indian Epic, Mahabharata, after Yudhistra was crowned as the King of Indraprastha, Duryodhana, who was insulted during the ceremony fumed with anger. Duryodhana and his brothers, as per the advice of their uncle Sakuni, desired to seek revenge and designed an evil plan for it! The Kauravas built a new hall in their palace and invited the Pandavas to Hastinapur to see the hall and also for a pleasure game arranged in the evening. In the game of dice, they tricked and defeated the Pandavas through unfair means of Sakuni’s tricks and took over their kingdom, their wealth and even themselves. Finally, they made Yudishtra pledge Draupathi in the game and won her as well.

To seek revenge on Draupathi who laughed at him in Indraprastha, Duryodhana made Duschadhana drag her to the court by holding her hair. With the Pandavas being a slave to Duryodhana, Draupathi who too was now titled as slave, was insulted in the court and they had their revenge. Unable to bear the support Draupathi was getting from Pithamaha Bhishma and Vidhura, resented Duryodhana asked Duschadhana to disrobe her in the court.

When Draupathi cried out for help, none came for her aid, including Pithamaha Bheeshma, her father-like Drona who is also a friend of Draupathi’s father, the King and even her husbands-the Pandavas.  Realizing that she can neither depend on her own self nor on her husbands and the great people around her or even on others for her protection, she surrendered herself to the Lord completely. At that time, she remembered the sage Vasishta's words that Narayana is the sole refuge and surrendered to Him with both hands raised over her head:

shanka chakra gadApANe dvArakanilayAchyuta!
govinda! puNDarIkAksha! rakshamAm sharaNAgatam

It is next to impossible for a woman to give up her natural sense of modesty and let go of her dress while she is being disrobed in front of many men. But Draupathi, without even a single finch of doubt, raised her hands above her head and pleaded Krishna for help. Such was her faith in Krishna. At that time, Sri Krishna was battling in the outskirts of Dwaraka. And from there, He gave protection to Draupathi by providing her attire until Duschadhana got exhausted and gave up.

Thirukkolur Ammal is asking "Did I show complete faith in the Lord like Draupathi?"
