 அவன் வேண்டாம் என்றேனோ ஆழ்வானைப் போலே. 

ஸ்ரீவத்சாங்கர் என்ற இயற்பெயர் கொண்டு மிகுந்த தனவந்தனாகவும், ஞானவானாகவும் காஞ்சிபுரத்தை அடுத்த கூரம் என்னும் ஊரில் வாழ்ந்த  கூரத்தாழ்வார், திருவரங்கத்தில் இருந்த இராமானுஜருக்கு சிஷ்யராகும் எண்ணம் கொண்டு, தன்னுடைய செல்வம் அனைத்தையும் அறச்செயல்களுக்கு தானமாக வழங்கிவிட்டு, கூரத்திலிருந்து தன் மனைவியை அழைத்துக்கொண்டு திருவரங்கம் வந்தவர். எம்பெருமானாருடைய ப்ரதான சிஷ்யர்களுள் ஒருவர் கூரத்தாழ்வான்.

நாலூரான் என்னும் அமைச்சரின் தந்திரத்தால் மதியிழந்த உறையூர் சோழ மன்னன், இராமானுசரை கைது செய்ய ஆணையிட்டான்.  கூரத்தாழ்வார் தம் குருவைப்போல் வேடம் தரித்துக்கொண்டு அரசனிடம் செல்ல, ராமானுஜர் கர்நாடகாவில் உள்ள திருநாராயணபுரத்திற்கு சென்று விடுகிறார். மன்னனுடன் ஏற்ப்பட்ட விவாதத்தின் விளைவால், கூரத்தாழ்வாரின் கண்களை பிடுங்கி விட மன்னன் ஆணையிட, கூரத்தாழ்வாரோ, “உன்னைப்போன்ற பாவம் செய்தவனைக் கண்ட கண்கள் எனக்கு தேவையில்லை.”, என்று கூறி, தனது கண்களை தானே பிடுங்கி எரிந்து விட்டு ஸ்ரீ ரங்கம் திரும்பினார்.

இதற்கிடையில், பெரிய நம்பிகள் பரமபதம் அடைந்துவிட, பெரிய நம்பிகளின் இறுதிச் சடங்குகளை முடித்து விட்டு ஸ்ரீரங்கம் வந்தடைந்தார் கூரத்தாழ்வார். ராமானுஜரும் அங்கு இல்லாததால் அவர் மனம் மிகவும் வேதனைப்பட்டது. ஆறுதல் வேண்டி ஸ்ரீரங்கம் கோயிலுக்குச் சென்று ஸ்ரீரங்கநாதரை தரிசிக்கச் சென்றார். ராமானுஜருக்கு நெருக்கமானவர்கள் யார் வந்தாலும் கோயிலுக்குள் அனுமதிக்கக் கூடாது என்று சோழ மன்னன் கட்டளையிட்டிருந்தான். ஆகவே கோயில் வாயில் காப்பான் ஒருவன் அவரை உள்ளே விட மறுத்து விட, மற்றொரு காப்பாளனோ, "ராமானுஜருக்கு இவர் வேண்டியவராய் இருந்தாலும், இவர் நல்லவர்.இவரை உள்ளே அனுமதிக்கலாம்' என்றபடியே அவரை கோயிலுக்குள் செல்ல அனுமதித்தான்.

கூரத்தாழ்வார், "ராமானுஜருக்கு நெருங்கியவர் என்பதால் கோயிலுக்குள் அனுமதிக்கிறேன் என்றால் உள்ளே செல்கிறேன். என் ஆச்சாரியாருடனான சம்பந்தத்தை விட்டுவிட்டு தான் ரங்கனை தரிசிக்க வேண்டுமென்றால், அந்த அரங்கனே எனக்கு வேண்டாம்.”  என்று கூறி விட்டு ஸ்ரீ ரங்கம் கோவிலை விட்டு வெளியேறினார். பின்னர், திருவரங்கத்தை விட்டு திருமாலிருஞ்சோலைக்குச் சென்று, 12 வருடங்கள் அங்குள்ள கள்ளழகருக்கு சேவை புரிந்தார். சோழ மன்னனின் இறப்புக்குப் பின், ஸ்ரீ ராமானுஜர் ஸ்ரீ ரங்கம் திரும்பிய பின்னரே கூரத்தாழ்வானும் ஸ்ரீ ரங்கம் திரும்பினார்.

திருக்கோளூர் அம்மாள், “கூரத்தாழ்வான் போல், ஆச்சார்ய சம்பந்தத்திற்கு மதிப்புக் கொடுத்து, அரங்கனயே வேண்டாம் என்று கூறினேனா?”, என்று வினவுகிறார்.

Koorathazhwan, also known as Kuresa and Srivatsanka Mishra, was the chief disciple of Sri Ramanuja. He assisted Ramanuja in all his endeavors. Due to the trouble caused by a Chozha king, Ramanuja had to leave Sri Rangam for Melkote. In an argument with the Chozha King, the king got furious and ordered Koorathazhwan’s eyes to be pulled out. On hearing this, saying that he doesn't need the eyes which have seen a sinner like the king, Koorathazhwan pulled away his eyes himself and left the court furiously. Periya Nambigal had given up his life and Koorathazhwan lost his eye sight.

Sri Ramanujacharya meanwhile had moved to Melkote along with his disciples and established Vaishnavism there with the support of the local king. One time, unable to bear the separation from Ramanuja, Koorathazhwan went to the Sri Rangam temple to have the darshan of Sri Ranganatha and console himself.

Due to his anger against Sri Ramanuja, the Chozha king had decreed that people associated with Sri Ramanuja should not be allowed inside the temple. Therefore, a gatekeeper at the temple stopped Koorathazhwan from entering. Meanwhile, "Even though Koorathazhwan is associated with Sri Ramanuja, he is full of good qualities. Therefore, he can be allowed inside.", saying so, another gatekeeper asked Koorathazhwan to  go in.

Koorathazhwan, on hearing the words of the gatekeeper, replied, "I should be allowed to see the Lord because of my relationship with my acharya and not because I have good qualities. Seeing the Lord by breaking one's connection with his acharya is not required". Saying so, he refused to go inside the temple and went back. Leaving Sri Rangam, he left for Thirumalirunsolai near Madurai. Only after 12 years, after Sri Ramanuja’s return to Sri Rangam after the Chozha King’s death, Koorathazhwan returned to Sri Rangam.

Thirukkolur Ammal is asking, "Did I respect my relationship to my acharya to the extent of saying no even to Lord Sriman Narayana, like Koorathazhwan?"
