கள்வன் இவன் என்றேனோ லோககுருவைப் போலே

கள்வன் என்பது ஸ்ரீமன்நாராயணனுக்கு ஆழ்வார்களும் அவரின் பக்தர்களும் பிரியத்துடன் வழங்கிய பெயராகும். கள்வன் என்றால் திருடன் அல்லது ஏமாற்றுபவன் என்று பொருள். எம்பெருமான் தனது பக்தர்களுடன் நடத்தும் லீலைகளினால் இவ்வாறு அழைக்கப்படுகிறார். மகாபலி சக்ரவர்த்தியின் யாகசாலையில் வாமனனாக சிறு உருவில் தோன்றி, மூன்று அடி நிலம் கேட்டு, திருவிக்ரமனாக மாறி உலகை அளந்தார் எம்பெருமான். அந்நேரம் அசுரர்களின் குருவான சுக்ராச்சாரியார், நாராயணனை கள்வன் என்றழைத்தார்.

இங்கு, திருக்கோளூர் அம்மாள், ஆழ்வார்களையே லோககுரு என்கிறார் என்றும் பொருள் கொள்ளலாம். தமது பாசுரங்களில், சில இடங்களில், பெருமானை நம்மாழ்வார் கள்வன் என்கிறார். திருவாய்மொழியில், "கொள்வான் அவன் மாவலி மூவடி தா என்ற கள்வனே" என்கிறார், வாமன அவதாரத்தை சுட்டிக்காட்டி.  

திருவாய்மொழி 2-2-10ல்,  'கள்வா! எம்மையும் ஏழுல கும்நின் உள்ளே தோற்றிய இறைவ!' என்று  சிவனும் பிரமனும் இந்திரனும் இதர தேவர்களும் ஒரு சமயம் நாராயணனை, ஸ்ரீ கிருஷ்ணா அவதாரத்தின் பொது அழைத்தனர் என்கிறார் நம்மாழ்வார். சிவபெருமான் நாராயணனுக்கு வரம் ஒன்று அளித்திருந்தார். அதை கிருஷ்ண அவதாரத்தில், கைலாயம் சென்று கண்ணன் கேட்கிறான். அனைத்து உலகிற்கும் எம்பெருமானே தந்தை. அவர் சிவனிடம் வரம் கேட்பதைக் கண்ட சிவபெருமான் "கள்வனே" என்கிறார்.

திருமங்கையாழ்வாரும், தனது திருநெடுந்தாண்டகம் என்னும் நூலில்,  எம்பெருமானை "கார்வனத்து உள்ளே கள்வா" என்கிறார்.

திருக்கோளூர் அம்மாள், “ஆழ்வார்களைப் போல் எம்பெருமானை  “கள்வன்” என்றேனா?”, என்கிறார்.

kaLvan ivan enREnO lOkaguruvaip pOlE

The name "kaLvan" (meaning, one who steals (stealing their heart) or one who cheats/tricks others) is one of the many names of Sriman Narayana. He does this for the sake of His devotees in many cases. Many Azhwars have referred the Lord as “Kalvan”, in their verses. In the yagasala of Mahabali, He arrived in the form of a small dwarf (vamana), asked for and obtained three steps of land, grew up as Trivikrama and measured all the worlds with His divine feet. At that time, the asura guru, Sukracharya called Him as a "kaLvan".

Here, Thirukkolur Ammal refers Azhwars as “Loka Guru” (teacher to the world). In many of his verses, Nammazhwar has referred the Lord as "kalvan". In Thiruvaimozhi 5-10-4, he says "kaLLa vEdaththaik koNdu pOyp puram pukkavARum" - here he refers to the Lord going amidst the asuras and taking away their faith in the Vedas.

In Thiruvaimozhi 3-8- 9, Azhwar says "koLvan nAn mAvali mUvadi thA enra kaLvanE" - referring to the Lord's vamana avtara. In Thiruvaimozhi 2-2-10, he says "kaLvA! emmaiyum Ezulagum nin uLLE thORRiya iRaivA ..." - in this pasuram, it says that, Lord Shiva, Brahma, Lord Indra and other devas calls Lord Sriman Narayana as "kaLvA". This refers to the incident where Shiva obtained a boon from Narayana that He would ask for and gets a boon from him. To fulfill that promise, during His Krishna avatara, He went to Kailasha and asked Shiva for a boon. Shiva calls Him "kaLvA" because, it is He who is the father of all including Shiva and yet He is asking for a boon from Lord Shiva, knowing all the truth. Since Shiva is known for the greatness of his knowledge it would be alright that he is referred to as the Loka Guru.

Thirumangai Azhwar in his Thirunedunthandagam, says "nIragaththAy! ... kArvAnaththu uLLAy! kaLvA!". Azhwar says it is His trickery that He is hiding and not showing Himself to Azhwar. At another place in Thirunedunthandagam, he says "puLLUrum kaLvA! nI pOgEl". Since this Azhwar invited the Lord Himself to learn from him "kaNNa nin thanakkum kuRippAgil kaRkalAm kaviyin poruL", it would be appropriate to refer to him as Loka Guru.

Thirukkolur Ammal is asking "Did I refer the Lord as 'kalvan' like the knowledgeable Azhwars?"

கடித்து அவனைக் கண்டேனோ திருமங்கையார் போலே

திருமங்கையாழ்வார் வைணவ நெறியைப் பின்பற்றி பக்தியில் சிறந்து விளங்கிய பன்னிரு ஆழ்வார்களுள் இளையவர் மற்றும் இறுதியானவர். சோழ நாட்டில் உள்ள திருவாலிதிருநகரி என்னும் ஊருக்கு அருகில் உள்ள திருக்குரையலூரில் பிறந்தவர். 'கலியன்' என்னும் இயற்பெயர் கொண்ட இவர், சோழமன்னனுக்கு படைத்தலைவனாக இருந்தார். ஒருமுறை போர்க்களத்தில் இவருடைய வீரத்தைக் கண்ட அரசன் இவரை சோழதேசத்தின் "திருமங்கை" நாட்டின் குறுநில மன்னனாக்கினான். அன்று முதல் இவர் "திருமங்கை மன்னன்" என அழைக்கப்பட்டார்.

திருமங்கை மன்னன், குமுதவல்லி நாச்சியார் எனும் மங்கை மீது கொண்ட காதலினால், நாச்சியாரின் விருப்பப்படி வைணவம் அனுசரிக்க ஆரம்பித்தவர், தினமும் ஆயிரம் திருமாலின் அடியார்களுக்கு அன்னம் இடுவதையும், திருக்கோயில் கைங்கரியங்களில் ஈடுபடுவதையும் செய்து வரலானார். காலப்பொழுதில் தன்னை முழுமையாக இதில் ஈடுபடுத்திக் கொண்டு தன் செல்வங்களையும், அரசு செல்வங்களையும் முழுக்க இழந்தார். சோழ மன்னனுக்கு வரி செலுத்தப் பணம் இல்லை. அரசன்  படையுடன் வந்து திருமங்கையைச் சிறைப்பிடித்தான். காஞ்சி வரதராஜப் பெருமாள் இவர் கனவில் தோன்றி, பணம் தருவதாகச் சொல்லி, மறைந்தார். இறைவன் கொடுத்த பணத்தில் வரி செலுத்தியதை அறிந்த மன்னன் பணத்தைத் திருமங்கையாரிடம் திரும்பக் கொடுத்தான்.

நாட்டை துறந்த மன்னன் திருமங்கை, கொள்ளை அடித்தாவது அடியார்களைப் பேண வேண்டும் என்னும் கொள்கை உடையவர் ஆனார். ஒருமுறை பெருமான், மணக்கோலத்தில் வர, ஆழ்வார் அவர்களிடம் இருந்த நகைகளையும், பொருள்களையும் பறித்தார். அப்பொழுது மணமகன் காலில் உள்ள நகையைக் கழற்ற இயலாமல் பல்லால் கடிக்க, பெருமானால், கலியன்     (பலம்     மிக்கவன்) என அழைக்கப்பட்டார். பறித்த பொருட்களை மூட்டையாக கட்டி எடுத்துச்செல்ல முயன்ற பொழுது அடியாரால் எடுத்துச் செல்ல முடியவில்லை. பெருமாளை நோக்கி, “எதும் மந்திரங்கள் போட்டாயா? நீ என்ன மாயங்கள் அறிந்தவனா? மந்திரத்தை கூறும், சொல்லாவிடில் இந்த வாளுக்கு இறையாவாய்” என்று தம் கையில் வாளைக் காட்டி அதிகாரத்துடன் கேட்க, தனக்கு சேவை செய்ய, தன் அடியார்களுக்கு சேவை செய்ய திருடவும் துணிந்த திருமங்கைக்கு ஸ்ரீமன் நாராயணனாக காட்சியளித்தார். எட்டெழுத்து மந்திரம் (ஓம் நமோ நாராயணாய) உபதேசித்தார்.

ஆழ்வார் ஆச்சரியத்துடன் நிமிர்ந்து பார்க்க நாராயணன் தன் திரு உருவில் மனைவியுடன் தரிசனம் தர அவருடைய அஞ்ஞான இருள் அகன்றது. தனது பெரிய திருமொழியின் முதல் பாசுரத்தை பாடினார் :

“வாடினேன் வாடி வருந்தினேன் மனத்தால்
பெருந்துயர் இடும்பையில் பிறந்து
கூடினேன் கூடி இளையவர் தம்மோடு
அவர்தரும் கலவியே கருதி
ஓடினேன் ஓடி உய்வதோர் பொருளால்
உணர்வெனும் பெரும்பதம் தெரிந்து
நாடினேன் நாடி நான் கண்டு கொண்டேன்
நாராயணா என்னும் நாமமே ”

திருக்கோளூர் அம்மாள், “திருமங்கையாழ்வார் போல் ஸ்ரீமன் நாராயணனின் திருவடி விரலை கடித்தாவது அவரின் அருள் பெரும் பாக்கியத்தை பெற்றேனோ?”, என்று வினவுகிறார்.

kadiththu avanaik kaNdEnO thirumangaiyAr pOlE

Thirumangai Azhwar is the last of the 12 Azhwar saints of south India. He is considered one of the most learned Azhwar and the most superior Azhwar in the context of composition of verses. He holds the title Narkavi Perumal, the mark of an excellent poet, and Parakala (Beyond Time). He, initially, worked as a military commander for the Chola King, a chieftain and then a robber. His real name was Kaliyan.

Thirumangai Azhwar fell in love with the beautiful Kumudavalli Nachchiyar and loved to marry her. She gave a set of conditions that he must become a Vaishnavite and that he must feed a thousand for over a year, everyday. He spent all his wealth on that. After running out of funds, wishing to continue the service, he became a highway thief. With the money left, he started constructing temple walls for Sri Rangam.

In order to shower their grace on Azhwar, the Lord and His divine consort dressed themselves as a newly-wed young couple and wearing gold ornaments appeared in front of Azhwar at a place called Thirumanangkollai. Azhwar and his assistants stopped them with a sword in hand and demanded all their jewellery. When it came to a ring worn on the feet of the Lord, he was unable to take it off. So, Azhwar used his teeth to bite the ring and take it off His feet.

Satisfied that he has robbed unto the last piece of gold from the group, Azhwar wrapped the sack and tried to pick it up. But it was too heavy for him. Thinking that the bridegroom is a sorcerer and has used magical spell to make sure the sack cannot be lifted by anyone. So, he threatened the Lord with his spear to tell him what mantra He had used, after seeing the bridegroom being able to lift it easily. Even though Thirumangai fell on the feet of Sriman Narayana for the piece of gold, satisfied at the very reason that in order to serve for his devotees and for his temple work he was so determined to not even leave the last piece of gold, revealing himself to Thirumangai Azhwar, Sriman Narayana himself taught the Narayana mantra or Ashtaksara (the eight syllabled) – "namo narayanaya", and turned the robber into a saint.

Thirumangai Azhwar in that moment sang the magnificent "vAdinEn" pasuram, the first verse of Periya Thirumozhi:

Vaadinaen Vaadi Varundhinaen Manaththaal
Perunthuyar Idumbaiyil Pirandhu
Koodinaen Koodi Ilayavar Thammodu
Avartharum Kalaviyae Karudhi
Odinaen Odi Uyivadhor Porulaal
Unarvenum Perum Padham Thirindhu
Naadinaen Naadi Naan Kandukondaen
Narayana Ennum Naamam"

Meaning, I was anguished, felt weak and sad in my heart just because I was born in this whole lot of sorrow and distress. I had friendship with the mean and cheap people, just for the mean pleasures they gave me. Then I ran and ran because of the Supreme Being changed my instincts and senses to search for the Supreme Being. Then, after determined searches, I found the Supreme Being in the name of Lord Narayana.

Thirukkolur Ammal is asking "Did I get the opportunity to attain His grace by biting the feet of Lord Sriman Narayana like Thirumangai Azhwar did?"
