 வாயில் கையிட்டேனோ எம்பாரைப் போலே

திருப்பெரும்பூதூரின் அருகில் உள்ள மழலைமங்கலத்தில் (தற்போதைய மதுரமங்கலம்) கிபி 1026 ஆம் ஆண்டு, கோவிந்த பட்டர் என்ற இயற்பெயருடன் பிறந்த எம்பார், ராமானுஜரின் சித்தி மகனாவார். திருப்புட்குழியில் தன் அண்ணனாகிய இராமானுசருடன் யாதவ பிரகாசரிடம் கல்வி பயின்றார். ஒருமுறை காசிக்குச் சென்று கங்கையில் நீராடுகையில் சிவலிங்கம் ஒன்று கிடைக்க, அதை எடுத்து வந்து காளஹஸ்தியில் வைத்து கோயில் கட்டினார்.  இச்சம்பவத்தால் "உளங்கைக் கொணர்ந்த நாயனார்" என சைவர்களால் அழைக்கப்பட்டார். சிவ பக்தனாக இருந்த கோவிந்த பட்டரை ராமானுஜரின் வேண்டுதலுக்கிணங்க, திருமலையில் இருந்த பெரிய திருமலை நம்பிகள் வைணவத்திற்கு திருப்பினார்.

பெரிய திருமலை நம்பியிடம், திருமலையில் ராமாயணத்தின் உள்ளர்த்தங்களை அறிந்து கொண்டிருந்த ராமானுஜர், ஒருசமயம், எம்பார் பாம்பின் வாயில் தனது கையை வைத்து ஏதோ செய்து கொண்டிருப்பதைக் கண்டார். சில நிமிடங்கள் செல்ல, எம்பார், பாம்பை விட்டுவிட்டு, தனது ஆச்சார்ய சேவைக்கு திரும்புவதைக் கண்டார். ராமானுஜர், "என்ன செய்து கொண்டிருந்தீர் பாம்புடன்?"என வினவினார்.

எம்பார், "அந்த பாம்பு தன் நாக்கை நீட்டிக் கொண்டிருந்தது. அருகில் சென்று பார்த்தபொழுது, நாக்கினுள் முள் ஒன்று தைத்திருந்தது. அதை எடுத்து விட்டேன். அது ஓடிவிட்டது.”, என்றார். அனைத்து உயிர்களையும் ஒன்றெனக் காணும் எம்பாரின் கருணை உள்ளதைக் கண்டு ராமானுஜர் பெருமிதமும் ஆனந்தமும் கொண்டார். வைணவனின் அடிப்படை தர்மம் மனித நேயம், கருணை, இரக்கம்.

திருக்கோளூர்அம்மாள், “எம்பாரைப் போல் அனைத்து உயிர்களிடத்திலும் கருணையுடன் இருந்தேனா?”, என வினவுகிறார்.

Govindar, maternal cousin to Ramanuja, who was later, called as Embar, was born in Mazhalaimangalam (now Madhuramangalam). Once, when he went on a yatra to Kasi, a Shiva Linga came into his hand while he was bathing in the river Ganges. From then, he became an ardent devotee of Shiva and settled in Kalahasti, near Tripathi, maintaining the Shiva temple there.

Accepting the request of Ramanuja, Periya Thirumalai Nambi engaged Embar and returned him to the Srivaishnavism. Embar then moved to Thirumalai and lived with his acharya Periya Thirumalai Nambi and performed services to him. One of the qualities of a Srivaishnava is feeling empathy for others. This quality was complete in Embar.

Ramanuja was at Tirumalai learning Sri Ramayan from Periya Thirumalai Nambi. One day, Ramanuja noticed Embar putting his hand inside a snake's mouth and later, leaving the snake in the garden, he went to continue his services to his acharya. When Ramanuja asked -"O Govinda! What did you do with the snake?”, Embar replied-"I noticed that the snake was keeping its tongue out and suffering. When I went near it, I saw that a thorn was stuck in its tongue. So, I pulled the thorn out. The snake then ran away. I hope it’s relieved from the pain it was going through." Ramanuja was amazed about his sense of mercy and blessed him.

 யான் சிறியேன் என்றேனோ திருமலைநம்பியைப் போலே

பெரிய திருமலை நம்பி, திருமலையில் அவதரித்தவர், ஆளவந்தாரின் முதன்மை சீடர்களுள் ஒருவர். ஸ்ரீசைல பூர்ணர் என்ற திருநாமமும் இவருக்கு உண்டு. ராமானுஜரின் தாய்மாமனான இவரிடம், ஆளவந்தார், ராமானுஜருக்கு ராமாயணத்தை கற்றுக்கொடுக்கும் பொறுப்பினை நியமனம் செய்தார். ராமானுஜருக்கு இளையாழ்வார் எனும் இயற்பெயரை சூட்டிய பெரிய திருமலை நம்பி, திருவேங்கடத்தில் இருக்கும் ஸ்ரீவைஷ்ணவர்களில் முதன்மையானவராக கருதப்பட்டவர். திருவேங்கடமுடையானுக்கு நித்ய கைங்கர்யபரராக இருந்து சேவை புரிந்த திருமலை நம்பி, தினமும் திருவேங்கடமுடையானுக்காக ஆகாச கங்கையிலிருந்து தீர்த்தம் கொண்டு வருவார்.

ஒரு சமயம், ராமானுஜர், வேங்கடவனைத் தரிசிக்க, திருப்பதிக்கு எழுந்தருளினார். பெரிய திருமலை நம்பியோ அந்நேரம் திருமலையில் இருந்தார். ராமானுஜரின் வருகையை அறிந்த பெரிய திருமலைநம்பி, பெருமாளின் தீர்த்த பிரசாதத்தை எடுத்துக் கொண்டு, ராமானுஜரை வரவேற்க, அவரே மலை இறங்கி சென்றார். தனது ஆச்சார்யான் என்ற முறையிலும், முதியவர் என்ற முறையிலும், ராமானுஜர் அவரிடம், ‘‘அடியேன் போன்ற சிறியோனை வரவேற்க தாங்களே வர வேண்டுமா? யாரேனும் தாழ்ந்தவர் இல்லயோ?’’ என்றார்.

திருமலை நம்பி, பெருந்தன்மையுடன், ‘‘ராமானுஜா! திருமலையில் நான்கு வீதிகளிலும் தேடினேன்; என்னைவிடச் சிறியவர் எவரும் கிடைக்கவில்லை! அதனால் நானே கொண்டுவந்தேன்.’’ என்று பதிலளித்தார். நம்பியின் தன்னடகத்தைக் கண்ட எம்பெருமானார் பெரிதும் வியந்தார்.

திருக்கோளூர் அம்மாள், “ஸ்ரீவைணவ கோட்பாடுகளை பாராட்டி, அதன் வழி வாழ்ந்து, என்னை சிறியன் என்றேனா?, என்று வினவுகிறார்.

Periya Thirumalai Nambi, also known as Srisaila Poornar, was one of the chief disciples of Alavandhar. Aavandhar gave Thirumalai Nambi, the responsibility of teaching Ramayanam to Ramanujar. Thirumalai Nambi was not only Ramanuja’s acharya but also his maternal uncle. It was Thirumalai Nambi who bestowed the name “Ilayazhwar” to Ramanuja when he was born. Thirumalai Nambi resided in Thirumala and he was the daily servitor to the Lord of Thirumala, in bringing the holy water from Akashganga (a waterfall in Thirumala) for the Lord.  

Thirumalai Nambi who resides in Tripathi, used to fetch water from Akashganga, climb the hill and reach Thirumala, perform his service to the Lord in the morning  (Theertha Kainkaryam) and would get down to Tripathi to teach Ramayan to Sri Ramanujar. Ramanuja stayed in Tripathi and learnt Ramayan from Thirumalai Nambi for a year.

When Ramanuja came to Thirumala, Ramanuja was hesitant to place his feet on the hills as it is Adisesha himself who was present in the form of the hills. Meanwhile, hearing that Ramanuja is in Tripathi, Thirumalai Nambi came down with the divine thulasi water and Prasadhams from the temple and welcomed him. Thirumalai Nambi, on hearing Ramanuja’s hesitant words, replied-“Ramanuja, please climb the hill considering it as bhagavat kainkaryam. Adisesha will be more than happy to get the bhagavata sripada sparsam (divine touch of devotees’ divine feet).”

Ramanuja seeing his old aged uncle Thirumalai Nambi running fast towards him, replied with respect and care, "For the sake of this small person, do you have to run and come this far? You could have sent the message and the prasadhams with someone younger. Why do you have to strain yourself?"

Thirumalai Nambi replied, "I too thought of doing the same and searched all around the Thirumala hills, but I could not find anyone younger than me (in terms of knowledge)".

Humbleness and complete surrender is considered as the prime quality in Srivaishnavism. Every Srivaishnava considers himself as the lowest person when meeting another Srivaishnava. Azhwar too calls himself "sIlamillA siRiyan".

Thirukkolur Ammal is asking, "Did I show the Srivaishnava quality like Thirumalai Nambi?”
