Thirukolur Penpillai Rahasyam - 16

It is said by our Purvacharyas that the truth spoken by Sri Rama and the falsehoods uttered by Sri Krishna are our refuge. However, in this statement by Thirukkolur Ammal it is shown that Sri Krishna too spoke only the truth. Just as Sri Rama was described as "rAmo vigrahavAn dharma:" so too Krishna can be described as "sanAtana dharma".

In his deathbed, when questioned by King Yudishtra, Pithamaha Bhishma pointed to Sri Krishna as dharma personified. Unlike Bhishma, Krishna made adjustments to the ethical priorities according to the ethics of the emergency situation, i.e., the situational ethics of apaddharma, for reaching the grand goal of well-being for each and everyone. Bhishma is very much aware of the situational ethics himself.

Even in Naachiyar Thirumozhi, Aandal says :

                              maalaayp piRandha nambiyai
                              maalE seyyum maNaaLanai
                              Elaap poyhaL uraippaanai
                              iNGkE pOthak kaNdeerE?

-Meaning, "The one who is born black in color like a rain cloud, my charming husband who could hypnotize you with his charming looks, the one who says all those unacceptable lies all the time, did you see him coming here?"

Krishna's words uttered for the protection of His devotees, may appear like falsehoods but they are not. When He went as the messenger for the Pandavas, Draupadi asked that He help her take her revenge on the Kauravas. At that time, Krishna stated that "The sky might fall down; the Earth may crumble; the Himalayas may break down into pieces; the oceans may become dry; even if all these improbable things were to come true, my words will never be falsified".

Sanjaya too calls Krishna as truth personified.

When Abimanyu’s wife, Uththarai's son was killed in her womb by Ashvaththama's celestial and the most powerful weapon, the Brahmastra, as a revenge against the Pandavas, Krishna stepped forward and vowed-“If it’s true that I have been a good  brahmachari and a speaker of nothing but truth, let this baby be given life.”

And the kid was given life again and was named as Parikshith.

(Some versions say that, Uttarā was terrified by the powerful rays of the weapon and worried about her child, she prayed to her uncle-in-law Krishna for help. Krishna pacified her and protected the child in the womb from the deadly weapon and thus saved his life.)

His words are always true. This is what is being established by Thirukkolur Ammal.

Thirukkolur Ammal is asking – “Did I have the confidence to state that whatever Krishna said is true, after knowing all the lies and lilas done by Krishna?”

Kurukshetra War - Night 10

With Pithamaha, the mighty undefeatable warrior of the three worlds being vanquished, both the armies were filled grief. The warriors of both the sides paid their respects and bowed at the mighty and illustrious warrior who was lying on the arrow bed.
While the foot soldiers and other warriors left the field paying their homage, surrounded by the sons of Pandu, Krishna, Dronacharya, Krpacharya, Duryodhana and his brothers, Abhimanyu, UpaPandavas and the foremost Kings and Princes, Bhishma said – “O my dear sons! This sight of you all standing together gratifies my soul. All my mighty sons, the mighty souls of my family, all together in front of me…this is what I wished to see before my death! Blessed I am as I get to see what I wished for.”
Though everyone stood silent, Pithamaha Bhishma glanced at them and spoke with a smile on his face – “This period is not an auspicious time for death. I will proceed to heaven and join my father and forefathers when the sun is at the northern solstice. Till then, I will hold my breath. It’s a boon granted by my father –‘Death can take you only when you desire’.”
Pausing for a moment to get hold of his head which was hanging, he raised his head bit higher and spoke – “I am not able to get hold of my head. Could someone get me a pillow to hold it straight?”
On Duryodhana’s command, his brothers rushed to their camps and fetched pillows filled with fine and delicate feathers. Pithamaha, seeing the pillows, said – “O Duryodhana! These are not the pillow a vanquished hero desires. I am going to die as a hero. Not as a King in his palace bed.”
Turing towards Arjuna who was shedding tears, Pithamaha said, -“O son! Partha! Get me a pillow which you think fits for a hero.”
Arjuna, considering the grandsire’s words as command, saluted him and acted immediately. Getting hold of his Gandiva and chanting few hymns, shooting three shafts towards the earth beneath Pithamaha’s head, he made a fine soft pillow that could hold the highly souled Bhishma’s head without hurting him.
Witnessing Arjuna’s immeasurable achievement, delighted Pithamaha praised him–“O Arjuna! You are an embodiment of talent, intelligence, goodness and morality. A Kshatriya who is following his duties should ignore the worldly pleasures in the battlefield. Hence, observing my Kshatriya duty, I can sleep only using weapons. I am gratified as always, my son!”
In the meantime, on Duryodhana’s advice, few physicians and their assistants who are skilled in removing arrows visited the place. Seeing them and understanding the purpose of their visit, greeting them with his smile and turning towards Duryodhana, Bhishma said – “O Son! Honor them with wealth. I am a Kshatriya. A mighty hero should die in the battlefield and he should be burnt with his weapon and armor. That’s the higher state of death destined for a Kshatriya hero. It will not seem fair if I receive treatment to reduce the pain.”
Listening to Pithamaha’s words, Duryodhana honored the physicians with gold and ornaments and dismissed them to the Kauravas camp. Pithamaha’s entire body was pierced with arrows and blood was dripping making the earth beneath the arrows wet and reddish.  His whole body was sweltering with pain.
Grandsire Bhishma, casting his eyes on Arjuna said – “Pierced by your shafts, my body is aching. I need a favor from you, O Arjuna!”
Filled with tears, pressing his knees on earth, Arjuna spoke with choking words – “Pithamaha! Forgive me for troubling you and hurting you. Order me and I will do anything that will satisfy you. Command me for I am your slave, O Pithamaha! What should I do?”
“Arjuna…my mouth is dry. Get me water, O mighty son!” – Getting orders from Bhishma, Arjuna bowed at him and in a blink of an eye, he stretched his Gandiva and called for Parjanya Astra by chanting hymns. Then, using his tremendous arrow, he pierced the earth to the south, near Bhishma’s shoulders and from the earth sprouted clean and auspicious Ganga, pure like God’s love, to pacify the thirst of her son. Pacifying the thirst of her son, she said-“Bless you, Arjuna, for bringing me here. I will stay beside my son and take care of him, till he wishes to reach for heaven.”

Pithamaha, with his thirst pacified, said –“O Arjuna! You never cease to amaze me! You are the foremost archer of the three worlds. None can defeat you when the Gandiva is there in your hands. Just the resonance of your Gandiva string is enough to insert fear in the hearts of your foes. With the mighty and highly souled Krishna protecting you, I bless you to achieve more victories in the future.”
On witnessing the happiness in Bhishma’s face and on hearing his words, Duryodhana, the nemesis of the Pandavas became depressed. Casting his eyes on the depressed Duryodhana, Pithamaha spoke unto him gently – “O son! In these ten days of war, you have witnessed the prowess of Arjuna. Even now, you witnessed how clever and a loyal Kshatriya Arjuna is. Listen to my words, O Son. No one can defeat him and none is capable of accomplishing the mighty feats of Arjuna. The celestial weapons which are known and belong only to the three-eyed Lord Rudra, to the devas and even to Brahaspathi are known only to two persons on this earth - Arjuna and Krishna.  So, redeem your senses, listen to my words and kindly cease this battle, right now. Let peace be made with the Pandavas while Krishna is not raged. Save your brothers. Don’t annihilate the Kshatriyas of this world.  Let there be friendliness among the kings and countries. Let the warriors return to their family, friends and kin. At least let the remaining warriors of both the sides live peacefully. Give Yudhistra his Indraprastha. Let peace prevail in you and let the battle be ceased with my death! Abandon your rage, absurdity and voracity. This is the only beneficial solution for both you and the Kuru family.”
Defiled by wickedness, Duryodhana did not pay attention to the words of the great soul. With eyes filled with rage, Duryodhana bowed to Pithamaha and bid farewell to him and left for his camp, followed by his Kings and followers.
Pithamaha, depressed on the failure of his final effort, spoke in lowered voice – “I am tired and feel exhausted. I need some rest. As of you all, return to your camp for you have a battle to fight tomorrow.”
Saying so, Bhishma closed his eyes and started meditating. With hearts plunged in agony, the Pandavas, Krishna and others bowed at the mighty Pithamaha and returned to their bivouacs. Hearing about Bhishma’s defeat, Karna rushed to the battlefield in his chariot. Witnessing the mighty soul of earth lying on arrow bed, filled with grief and with tears in his eyes, he descended from his chariot and ran towards Bhishma.
With pain and tears choking his voice, Karna spoke – “O mighty chief of Kuru! O illustrious Pithamaha! The son of Radhey you hate is here!”
Hearing Karna’s voice, Pithamaha opened his eyes and in a cheering voice, he said – “Karna! I am grateful to see you! Though I have insulted you, I know that you will come and visit me, for sure. I was expecting to see you! ‘The son I hate!!?’ How can I hate my son!? You, son of Kunti, deserve the crown. Moreover, you are my favorite warrior. You are the only warrior who is skilled enough to battle against me. My one and only best and pertinent challenger! I know how much you, as a warrior, will be hurt in hearing my insults in front of all those mighty kings and warriors. Forgive me, for my words, O son! I hold no grudge, Karna. I purposely made sure you stay away from the battle for two reasons. One, I don’t want you to fight against your brothers. I was hoping that, if, you are not going to battle, Duryodhana might stop the war. Secondly, if war is certain, then other than me there is only you who can protect Duryodhana. I am aware of your prowess and skill, O Karna. In archery, you and Arjuna are one and the same. You are same like Krishna in temperament, energy, kindness and skill in battle strategies. You are incapable of being defeated even by Arjuna! For a long time, all I ever did to you and to Duryodhana was all my small efforts to bring peace among you brothers.”
“O Pithamaha! Forgive me for my ignorance!! I have been blind and ignorant! Forgive me, though I am not even worth asking even for forgiveness!” – wept Karna.
“O Karna! Listen to me, only you can cease this battle! Let this massacre end with my death. Free the Kshatriyas from the fear of death. Free the earth from the burden of war. Go and join with your brothers. If you join the Pandavas, Duryodhana will cease the battle.” – said Bhishma.
“Pithamaha, I live under the shadow of Duryodhana. This life I live, the wealth I donate and the pride I earned are all because of him. I cannot falsify the trust he have and the words I have vowed. My destiny is bound to Duryodhana. Keeping in my mind all those, it’s my duty to be with him when he needs me the most. Kindly forgive me for my behavior and grant me permission to participate and win, at least in my duties.” – requested Karna with teary eyes.
Smiling at Karna for his respect towards Duryodhana, Bhishma said –“O Karna! If that’s what you desire, let it be as you wish. Fight with courage and serve the King, without any desire, malevolence and wrath in your mind. Fulfill your duties that you are bound to, as a Kshatriya and as a friend. You have my permission, Son.”
Acknowledging the mighty Bhishma with joined palms, Karna addressed –“O Pithamaha! Without you, the Kaurava army will be fear struck by now. From today, the illustrious Krishna will be their blazing wind and the Pandavas’ army will be fierce like the forest fire. Who is there to protect the Kaurava army other than you? How will I be able to defend Duryodhana?”

“Son, do not underestimate your prowess. Just like how rainy clouds are to a soil, such is your prowess. You are the last refuge for the Kaurava army. The world’s mightiest and foremost archers, forever, will be my two grandsons – You and Arjuna. Proceed with courage and perform your duty. Just like how Krishna protects Arjuna, same are you to Duryodhana. Go now to Duryodhana. Lead the army with your mightiness. From now on, only you can protect the Kaurava army from the mighty Arjuna and Bhīma.” – Bhishma cheered Karna.
Karna, considering Bhishma’s words as a command, saluted him and touched his feet. With grandsire’s blessings, Karna rushed to the Kaurava camp, desire of fulfilling his duty.
Reaching the Kaurava camp, Karna saw the depressed army of Duryodhana. Just like a flock of deer is troubled and fear struck in front of a lion pack, the whole Kaurava army was restless with the loss of Bhishma. The entire camp was filled with absolute silence. Deprived of hope and senses and immersed in fear, questions and thoughts, everyone resembled statues without souls. Beholding Karna entering the Kaurava camp in his magnificent chariot, shining like god himself, the warriors shouted-“Karna! Karna!”. Tears of joy filled their eyes, witnessing their redeemer.
The hearts which were filled with depression and fear was now filled exceedingly with joy, hope and relief. The cheers of the warriors, the sound of the drums and the soldiers beating their shields reached the sky and delighted the camp’s ether. Duryodhana, who was sitting depressed inside his bivouac, unable to find a way to encourage his army heard the cheers and like a child running towards the mother with happiness, he ran towards Karna. Embracing Karna, delighted Duryodhana spoke – “Behold my brave warrior! Behold the arrival of my mighty Karna! Your defender! Our rescuer!”
Holding his friend and turning towards the mighty army of Kaurava, Karna addressed – “With the defeat of Bhishma, the mighty soul of earth, I do not see anyone mighty enough to protect us all. Every single warrior’s life on this battle field is definitely petite with that mighty warrior gone. I will hold the duty of defending you all!! What was once the mighty Bhishma’s, ‘Protecting the mighty Kaurava army!’, that duty lays upon my shoulders now. Defended by me, proceed in the battlefield against the foes, for the King. I will protect you all with my mighty bow. Considering not my life, I will duly proceed and battle against the Pandavas, considering only the duties of a Kshatriya. Fight you Kshatriyas! For the King!”
On hearing Karna’s inspiring speech, the whole of Kaurava army cheered and regarded the Pandavas as already vanquished. With the army getting prepared for the next day’s battle with cheered hearts, Duryodhana, along with Karna and foremost Kings and friends entered his bivouac.
“With the mighty souled Bhishma protecting us, the army has battled for these ten days. Without him, now, who is mighty enough to lead us like Pithamaha? Who is there to lead and protect us like him, against those mighty Pandavas and especially the unarmed trickster Krishna? There’s none other than you, O son of Suta, my dear friend! Only you can cheer the army to battle with prowess and courage. The whole of Kaurava camp came to life only after seeing you. Without doubt, there is only you, to lead and protect us.” – said Duryodhana.
Hearing Duryodhana’s words, Aswathama and Dronacharya were shocked. Dronacharya left the bivouac with a raged heart. Witnessing Dronacharya’s disapproval and Duryodhana’s negligence, placing his hand on his friend’s shoulders, Karna said – “O Friend! I am delighted that you are confident that I will earn you your victory. I will definitely be happier to lead the army for you. But, you should also consider the mighty warriors of the army, other than me. There are senior warriors, skilled and experienced and talented more than me, without doubt. The generalissimo of an army should be someone who is mighty, intelligent, well versed in all battle strategies and also should be clever and kind enough to treat everyone as equal. Someone, who was always looked up by the soldiers for support and has been a refuge at times of troubles, worth of all the due respects they will get. We have one such mighty soul, whom even Arjuna will fear to oppose. The wielder and expert in handling all kind of weapons, the mighty, the talented and skilled senior, high souled Dronacharya, your guru is by your side. Make him as the generalissimo, friend. Everyone will follow his command and also, he is the only one who is mighty enough to handle all the Pandavas and the army, singly. So, make him as the leader and defender of your army. Let us go to his bivouac now!”
The mighty Kings and brothers of Duryodhana also approved favoring the words of Karna. Reaching the bivouac of the mighty Dronacharya, Duryodhana said –“O Guru! Foremost of warriors! Forgive me for my words and ignorance. There’s none who is good as you, in controlling the Kaurava army. None among the Kings and warriors are mighty and skilled enough like you to lead us to our victory. I request you to lead the army and help us vanquish the foes.  Lead us and we will follow you, considering your words as our commands till death.”
“Son! Desiring your victory, I will fight against the Pandavas. While your troops will be proceeding to battle tomorrow with cheered hearts, the Pandavas and their army will be filled with fear, seeing me as your generalissimo. Fear not, as I am here to lead you and your army.”- said Drona.
Acharya Drona as CIC

Delighted on Dronacharya’s words, Duryodhana with cheered heart, made Dronacharya as their commander-in-chief. The Kings and the warriors, with cheered hearts, uttered loud shouts which reached the Pandavas camp and implanted fear in their hearts.

Kurukshetra War - Night 9

Sunset
The day belonged to the Kauravas! King Duryodhana rejoiced and cherished every moment of his time in the battlefield. The camp reflected the result of the days’ battle. The Kaurava camp was filled with revels. With night setting in, everyone retired to bed, hoping for victory tomorrow.
The Pandavas camp was filled the effects of Pithamaha’s prowess in the battle. The soldiers who were injured were getting their cures while the rest who believe they are miraculously alive were plucking the sharp arrows from their battle armor which, by god’s grace, failed to reach their heart. There was no peace in the minds of the soldiers and they were unable to sleep, fearing about the agility of the mighty Bhishma they might get to face the next day. Even the soldiers who slept dreamt of Pithamaha with his bow and celestial arrow waiting to kill them.
With nine days of battle being fought, the mighty warriors of the Pandavas too were unable to sleep, terrified and troubled on the mightiness of Pithamaha Bhishma. The Kings sat for a council along with Krishna, expecting a favorable solution.Everyone discussed about various strategies and array formations but all their hopes diminished when they think of Pithamaha, the mighty warrior of all time.
“Pithamaha is crushing us like an elephant stepping on a flower. He is slaying everyone with just one look and one arrow. Every single warrior of the army who is facing the grandsire in the battlefield is getting killed for sure. Challenging him is like challenging Lord Yama. Having him as our foe, I don’t see a ray of hope to win.” – said dejected Arjuna.
The Kings of the allied Kingdoms nodded in acceptance.
“We are already less in terms of Akshauhinis. With Bhishma battling fiercely, I don’t think we will have enough soldiers by the end of the day, tomorrow. While battling, he resembles like he is packed with fire, thunder and wind. He knows what to do and when to perform it. That single strategy of him, not just his mighty skill and expertise but even his battling strategies are more than enough to subjugate our army in the battle.” – said generalissimo Dhrishtadyumna.
Hearing the words of Dhrishtadyumna, King Yudhistra spoke in a dejected voice– “With Pithamaha standing against us in the battle, we don’t even have the slightest chance. He will definitely slay us all. O Krishna, I consider life as a gift. It should be lived with peace. Battling against Pithamaha is like, losing the hope to live. I, O Krishna, therefore, have no desire to battle anymore. I will retire into the woods. It’s better for everyone who is alive. Everyone will be benefited in my exile and there will not be any more unwanted deaths in this battlefield. Pithamaha too will not be burdened about Hastinapur,Duryodhana and us.”
“O Yudhistra! Do not indulge in such thoughts when you have me by your side. You also have your mighty brothers, who will win the three worlds for you. Comfort yourself, O King. He who is capable of defeating even Lord Indra in a combat, Arjuna, your mighty brother, has vowed to slay Pithamaha in the battle. If he is capable of defeating the Lords, what doubts you, in him slaying Pithamaha? For you, he, for sure, will slay Pithamaha, with me as his protector. If, out of his love for Pithamaha, Arjuna does not wish to slay him, I, for your sake, will disregard my vow and will slay grandsire in the battlefield. Don’t you worry for you have me.” – Krishna comforted King Yudhistra.
Comforted on Krishna’ words, King Yudhistra said – “O Krishna, with you by our side, there is nothing unachievable. For my sake, I do not wish you to falsify your words. Hence, for the sake of me and my army, assist us with your words and strategies. Tell me what I should do, that will benefit us and dharma, without disregarding my duties.”
“O King, before the start of the battle, Pithamaha informed to you: ‘I will fight for Duryodhana on behalf of Hastinapur, but, I will guide you in the war, whenever you ask for it.’ I hope you remember those words. So what if we request his assistance and also a solution to this hitch.” – said Krishna.
Though relieved for a moment, King Yudhistra, after a lapse of moment, said – “O Lord! He is the one who was there for us when we had nothing. He was our father, our guru, our leader and everything. What we are now, in character and talent is all just a fragment of him. The only solution that he can give to us right now will be the way to slay him. Cursed, O Krishna. My soul is definitely cursed to do such a shameful act. It’s a disgrace for dharma. O Madhava, this Kshatriya life itself is a cursed one.”
“Kshatriya duty, O King. It is Kshatriya duty! This curse is not only on you. But for every Kshatriya, who should do it for the welfare of their citizens. Pithamaha will understand it.” – said Krishna.
“We will go to Pithamaha’s bivouac, without delay and ask him the way. He, for sure, will give us a beneficial solution. We will fight as he says.” – said King Yudhistra with a heavy heart.
“O Yudhistra, Son of Dharma, your notion is good. For you, he will definitely guide and lead you towards victory. Let’s proceed to Pithamaha’s bivouac without delay.” – Saying so, Krishna, along with the Pandavas proceeded to the camp of the Kauravas while the rest of the council members remained in the camp, discussing about the strategy for tomorrow’s battle and also, waiting eagerly for the return of Krishna and the Pandavas with a favorable solution to defeat the mighty grandsire.
Krishna and the Pandavas reached the bivouac of Pithamaha. Bowing to the grandsire, they sat on the seats.
“Blessed I am to see Krishna, in my bivouac. Welcome O Krishna, for blessing this soul which is troubled. Welcome O Sons of Pandu. What is it that I can do to please your heart?” – greeting everyone, Pithamaha enquired about the reason of their visit.
“O Pithamaha! You are the root of our talent and skill and goodness. Considering your words as god’s words, we accepted for this war only for dharma and for the welfare of the people. These nine days of war has seen so many deaths- soldiers, warriors, elephants, riders and steeds. You blessed us for victory in this war. But, we fail to see the hope for it. We would like to stop the annihilation of these creatures. You, the adroit soul on earth, is the only person who can guide us at this time of distress.” – said King Yudhistra.

Pithamaha!
“Worry not, dear Son, when you have Krishna with you. I have faith in the mightiness of you five. What is troubling you? Tell me, so that I can see what this old man can do to satisfy your hearts. I will give my everything to achieve it, for you.” – Said Pithamaha with fondness.
Listening to Pithamaha’s words, seeing his love for them, the Pandavas felt embarrassed to even speak.
Krishna, on seeing the unresponsive Pandavas, spoke – “Pithamaha, only on the victory of the Pandavas, dharma can be sustained on earth. They worry on how to attain victory in this battle.”
“Krishna! They have you!! Why should they worry then?” – enquired Pithamaha.
"Unto Bhishma’s words, King Yudhistra continued – “O Grandsire, with you blazing in the battlefield like the second sun… When you are fierce with your bow and arrow in your hands, the destruction of your foe is certain. How can we attain victory when my army is terrified to even stand against you?”
Listening to Yudhistra’s words, Pithamaha addressed – “O Son! What you are saying is true. As long as I am alive, you won’t be able to win this battle. But, if I am vanquished, there’s nothing that can stop you from winning.” Glancing at Krishna with a decision in his mind, Pithamaha continued – “Yudhistra, I give you permission to attack me. At times like this, have your eyes fixed on your mission. As your mission is dharma, you deserve victory. So strike me tomorrow and earn your victory.”
“Pithamaha! You are incapable of being defeated. Even if the devas and demons unify and battle against you, they will be scotched. Such is your prowess.” – said King Yudhistra.
Sikandi
“It’s true, dear Son. My father has blessed me that death will embrace me only when I ask for it. If I am defeated, then your victory will be certain. When I am armed, I am bound to the rules of a commander. But even in such a case, I will not raise my bow against:  Unarmed warriors, warrior whose armor is slipped, one whose flag in his chariot is broken, warrior lying on the ground, fleeing and terrified warriors and also, against a female or even someone whose name is a female. I have resolved that I never will fight against these people, under any circumstances. The mighty son of Drupada who was a female earlier, mighty warrior Sikandi, she has vowed to slay me. But, though she is a man now, I will not raise my weapon against her. Place her as the lead tomorrow in the battle and fight against me. My dear son, Arjuna, you are the only person skilled to trounce me. Place Sikandi in front and attack me. I will not be striking back at you, for you have Sikandi as your shield. Attack me and throw me away from my chariot. Once I am down, I will not raise back to fight. That way, victory will be yours. Victory will be yours, for certain.” – addressed Pithamaha.
Arjuna, on listening to Pithamaha’s words, broke into tears and filled with shame, replied unto the mighty grandsire – “O Pithamaha! How can I slay you? You are our father, our guru, our idol…You are our mighty, intelligent, caring and ever loving Pithamaha. How can I vanquish you? I would even prefer to die in the battle than to fight against you.”
"O Son! Arjuna, Listen to me. I feel proud to be defeated by you. I am gratified, for my death is leading to dharma’s victory. Release me from this burden! Moreover, I accept my defeat whole heartedly as a decree for my behavior in the court room during the dice game. You are my best disciple, son. And, as a follower of dharma, I would like to see you keep your eyes fixed on dharma. So, without any distress, vanquish me in the battle.” – replied Bhishma.
Saluting grandsire Bhishma, the Pandavas and Krishna retired to their camp. The council was called again. The Pandavas explained the conversation they had in Pithamaha’s bivouac.
Pandavas council!
Arjuna, unable to make decision, with his head lowered, spoke – “Why should it be me? Why did I even vow to kill him, in first place? It doesn’t matter even if we are defeated. I will not slay him. I will gladly accept death or exile too.”
Krishna, on listening to the distressed words of Arjuna, spoke gently – “O Arjuna! Being a Kshatriya, you cannot refrain from your vow. None in this world is capable of defeating Pithamaha, except you. Consider Pithamaha’s words, Arjuna. Lead him to the path of Moksha and relive him from the burden he is holding in his heart. Consider it as a favor you are doing to him. Also, consider it as a favor you are doing for the welfare of your citizens. It’s an eternal duty of a Kshatriya. For a Kshatriya, people and dharma comes first.”
Accepting Krishna’s words blindly, Arjuna set his mind on defeating Pithamaha in the battle. Generalissimo Dhrishtadyumna and Arjuna discussed about the strategies for the battle to be fought. “By the time Sikandi and Arjuna faces Pithamaha, we should have the other Maharathas to hold the rest of the warriors of Kuru side.”- said Bhīma.
“Sikandi can fight against Pithamaha and I will protect her from Pithamaha’s soldiers with my shafts.”  - said Arjuna.
Having discussed about the strategies to vanquish the mighty Bhishma, everyone retired to their tent, expecting the most expected dawn.

Kurukshetra War - Night 8

Kauravas’ camp.  Returning from an arduous battle, the soldiers were engaged in dressing their wounds. The chariot riders were checking the conditions of the steeds. The warriors and the generals dealt with their weapons and army status for tomorrow’s array formation. Everyone was getting prepared to retire for the day as soon as possible.
Duryodhana’s bivouac. Duryodhana, his beloved brother Duchadhana, Gandhara King Saguni, Salya, Aswathama and Karna were discussing about the day’s battling techniques, the faults made and about tomorrow’s requirements.
“We have mighty Pithamaha as generalissimo and mighty Dronacharya, Krpacharya, Aswathama, King Bhagadatta and many more on our side. We have eleven Akshauhinis!!! Even after having all these, why is it that we are not able to finish those five sons of Pandu? I never thought that this war will even last for 8 days.” – Said Duchadhana in a dejected voice.
“O Duchadhana, it’s because of the love those four mighty warriors viz., Pithamaha, Dronacharya, Krpacharya and King Salya have for the Pandavas. They are battling only to resist them. They aren’t fighting with any intention to slay those Pandavas.” – replied Saguni.
“Undeniably, Uncle. I have no idea why they are behaving like this. Because of their love, the Pandavas are taking it as an advantage and are obliterating my forces. I am losing my hope of winning this battle because of their conduct.” – said depressed Duryodhana.
Observing his friend’s depressed face, Karna said – “O friend! Don’t lose your hope. We will get our day of victory.”
“Pithamaha is only using his years of skills and expertise in the battlefield against the chariot warriors and knights. He is not focusing on slaying the Pandavas. He is just being generous.” – said Aswathama.
The chamber remained silent while everyone was thinking to themselves on how to solve this issue.
“O Duryodhana! There’s one way for you to come out of this trouble. As the King, you have the right on your Generalissimo. Why not make him withdraw from his post?” – asked Saguni.

“Uncle, look outside. We have these many soldiers and kings with us only because of him. They are devoted to Pithamaha. Not to me. Moreover, the soldiers follow their general’s command. Not the King’s.” – replied Duryodhana.
“O Duryodhana! Why not make him withdraw staging wound issues or sickness. That way, we can make Karna as the commander- in-chief!” – Saguni explained his sly plan.
“O Friend! King Saguni’s plan sounds profitable. If I am there in the battlefield,  I am sure the battle would not have lasted this long. With Pithamaha staying away from the battle, I will be your generalissimo and I will slay Arjuna and his mighty Somakas, the Pandyas and the Kekayas. We can seize Yudhistra in front of Pithamaha itself. You know, Arjuna’s fate is in my hand.” – said Karna, sounding excited.
Everyone started to think about the victory and started to support the plan. “Indeed Duryodhana, Bhishma will not slay the Pandavas even if we are dead. So, our only option is to remove him from the battle. So, go to his marquee right now and beseech that old man to lay down his weapons. Pacify him. If not, command him to do so. We can win with Karna.” – urged Saguni.
Rising from his seat, turning towards Karna, Duryodhana said – “Dear Friend! I will meet you in your tent after conversing with Pithamaha. From this night, I have hope in victory and throne for I have my trust on you, undeniably.”
Duryodhana commanded his charioteer to ready his steed. He changed his attires and left to Pithamaha’s bivouac along with Duchadhana and few of his brothers. Witnessing Duryodhana hastening towards Pithamaha’s tent, the soldiers who were sleeping outside their tents woke up with confusion. They gathered alongside the path of Duryodhana and bowed. The archers and knights bowed to their King while few generals followed Duryodhana in their steed, sensing trouble.
Reaching the quarters of Pithamaha Bhishma, Duryodhana descended from his steed. Followed by his brothers and generals, Duryodhana entered the chamber of Pithamaha. Pithamaha welcomed and greeted everyone. Bowing unto Bhishma, everyone sat on the seats, wondering how to start the conversation.
Duryodhana rose from his seat and bent himself with hands joined. He then spoke with his voice filled with woe – “O Pithamaha, we entered this battlefield under your protection. With you as the lead, we could even win the Asuras and Devas. You, battling for us shows your love and care for the Kuru family and for me. To you, the Pandavas and their army is nothing, based on your years of expertise and talents.”
“Duryodhana! What is the purpose of this visit? Speak freely.” –said Pithamaha, sensing Duryodhana’s cheese coated words.
“‘Don’t worry, Duryodhana! I will slay those Panchalas, Somakas and Kekayas for you.’ These were your words, O Pithamaha. Spare the Pandavas. Banish their army alone as you have said and make your words true. Or else, slay the Pandavas. If your love for the Pandavas stops you from all these, I request you to be merciful towards me and allow Karna to fight.  Let him be my army commander.” – said Duryodhana.
The tent was filled in silence. The generals were stunned to hear Duryodhana’s words. Filled with rage, Pithamaha glanced at Duryodhana with ire on his eyes and said – “Duryodhana! You are asking me to lay down my weapons. In all my years of battling, none has got the courage to ask me so. I have always battled for you, won countries for you and did all those that you desire. Why are you still being so harsh towards me?”
“Pithamaha, Karna will fight for me and will get me my victory and the death of the Pandavas. With you as my commander in chief, I do not see those two to happen in near future.” – replied Duryodhana.
“O Duryodhana! Why are you still not seeing the truth? The Pandavas are unbeatable. They will be invincible for they have Krishna by their side. You have personally witnessed Arjuna’s mightiness. Don’t you remember the incident where even Lord Agni came to him for help, in burning the forest? Or, the one where he rescued you and your wife from Gandharva King while your mighty Karna laid unconscious. Or… the one where he single-handedly terrified our army in Virata. And the incident where he defeated King Drupada for Dronacharya. Have you forgotten all those? With Krishna, the protector of the universe protecting Arjuna, there is no possible way to slay him. Though he is not fighting, Krishna is the supreme soul and he has more powers than we all can think of.” – Pithamaha stopped for a moment to grasp his breath and controlled his rage.
He then continued - “O Duryodhana! You desire to be King and yet you still remain ignorant of what to speak and how to speak. Your words have hurt my heart so bad. You doubted my loyalty towards Hastinapur. You doubted my talent. I, vow in front of all these great men gathered. Listen carefully, O Duryodhana, I, shall slaughter the army of the Pandavas tomorrow, excluding Sikandi. I will not slay her even if I get to die because of her. I will slay them in battle and prove myself to you! Go and have a good sleep, O Duryodhana, for tomorrow is the day you wish to see.”
Satisfied on Pithamaha’s words, saluting him, Duryodhana and the men gathered returned to their respective bivouacs. Duryodhana met Saguni and Karna and informed about his conversation in Pithamaha’s tent.
“Duchadhana! Get the forces ready tomorrow. Pithamaha is filled with wrath and he has vowed to vanquish the Pandavas’ army. We must do all we can to protect him. I see a ray of hope!” –said Duryodhana with a bliss.

Kurukshetra War - Day 8

With the time for sunrise nearing, the Kaurava warriors formed the Oormi (ocean) array and the Pandava troops formed the Sringataka array(horned formation). Beholding the troops, without any delay, the sun rose in the east and followed by the leonine shouts of the warriors and them banging their shining weapons on their shields and with the drums beaten and conchs blown, the fierce battle began for the eighth day!
Attacking one another, both the troops engaged in despatching their foes to heaven. Delighted in seeing the energy around him, Pithamaha Bhishma rushed against the Panchala warriors, slaying the mighty archers and cavalries of the Pandava troops. Terrifying not, under Bhīma and their Generalissimo Dhrishtadyumna, the Panchala soldiers rushed against Pithamaha. Duryodhana, along with his brothers came in for Pithamaha's defense and engaged in showering arrows at Bhīma. Responding to mighty Bhishmas arrows and to those of Duryodhana and his brothers’ at the same time, Bhīma seemed like Lord of Death in the eyes of the Kaurava soldiers. Slaying the charioteer of Pithamaha and turning towards his brothers, with a sharp dart Bhīma beheaded Prince Sunabha, brother of Duryodhana. With the steeds of Bhishma running uncontrollably, the brothers of Duryodhana engaged with Bhīma, unable to control their wrath for their brothers death.
Bhīma engaged in showering arrows uninterruptedly and consumed the Kaurava warriors like forest fire. Beholding the armored brothers and recalling his vow, with a sharp dart, he beheaded Prince Aparajitha. Holding his Vayavya bow firmly, with straight darts, he slew Prince Kundhadhara and Prince Panditaka even before the Kauravas could notice. And then, like lightning, with three more pointy darts, he slew Prince Visalaksha right in the neck and then with another straight pointy dart, he fell Prince Mahodhara, letting the dart pierce the chest and appear at his back, piercing the sturdy armor. Ceasing not, with three broad darts, Bhīma beheaded Prince Adityaketu and with an exceedingly sharpened pointy dart, he slew Prince Vahvasin.
Bhima against his Kaurava brothers!
Beholding the form of Bhīma, the rest of the brothers fled, leaving their platoon and even ignoring the yells of Duryodhana – “Turn back at once and slay that Bhīma!! At least for the sake of your deceased brothers!!”
After slaying the brothers of Duryodhana, Bhīma, accompanied by the heroic Abhimanyu, rushed against the elephant warriors of the Kaurava troops and engaged in slaughtering them. The wounded elephants ran in pain and crushed the Kaurava warriors near their feat, increasing the death count of the Kaurava division. Arjuna, under the protection of Chekitana and the UpaPandavas, engaged in slaying in hundreds, the Kings of smaller Kingdoms and tribes who joined the Kauravas while Nakula and Sahadeva fought with the knights division of the Kauravas, slaughtering cavalries and steeds in thousands. Satyaki singly engaged with the Kaurava warriors and crushed the Kaurava troops equal to the prowess of Pithamaha Bhishma.
Beholding his troops being slaughtered and crushed by the Pandavas, filled with grief and rage, clueless Duryodhana rushed towards Bhishma and said – “My brothers are killed! My troops are being slaughtered and rest are retreating, afraid of Bhīma, Arjuna and Abhimanyu. I see that you have no interest towards me and my victory. Still caring for the Pandavas, I hope you are not being loyal to me, to my father and to Hastinapur.”
Filled with rage on listening to Duryodhana’s words, Pithamaha yelled in anger – “Duryodhana! Don’t you doubt my loyalty to Hastinapur, to your father or to you! I, along with Dronacharya, Gandhari and Vidhura warned you about this and pleaded you and yet, out of your greed and irrational thinking, you alone made this war happen. For your sake, Drona, Karna and myself are battling against our very own kin and friends. Remember what I am about to say: With Lord Krishna by their side, the Pandavas will win this battle and Bhīma will slay every single warrior who opposes him. So, cease envisaging victory and throne and fight with only heaven as your redeemer. Else, seek forgiveness from Krishna and end this battle, right now, for the sake of everyone's welfare!”
Raged, Duryodhana left the place and engaged in slaughtering the Pandava warriors with wrath. Meanwhile, the Pandava troops too were crushed by Dronacharya, Aswathama, Bhishma and Kritavarman. Under the leadership of their King and princes, the Panchala warriors engaged in a fierce battle against the mighty Bhishma as the sun reached his meridian and scorched the earth with his heat waves.
Breaching the Pandava cavalry division of Abhimanyu, Gandhara King Saguni rushed in, along with his brothers Gaya, Charmavat and Suka and their platoons. Beholding the Gandhara cavalries and the archers approaching, excited heroic Abhimanyu engaged in crushing them with his sharp darts. Witnessing Abhimanyu’s prowess, intensified Gandhara brothers surrounded him and showered their arrows and lances at him, interminably. Terrified not, Abhimanyu covered them with his perfectly aimed darts which pierced the armor of few, wounded few soldiers gravely, slew steeds and charioteers, beheaded few archers and pierced the chest of few cavalries and spear men and even made few unconscious while the rest fell deprived of life, but not a single dart fell on the ground without blood on it. Before the Gandhara soldiers could regain their senses and get hold of their bow and weapons, drawing his sword and shield, Abhimanyu singly engaged against those warriors, making the warriors and archers tough to strike him. Nearing the chariot of the brothers of King Saguni, Abhimanyu cut off the hands and legs of the Gandhara brothers and slew them with his sharp edged sword, in front of the Gandhara knights and archers. Witnessing the lifeless Gandhara brothers and the fierce Abhimanyu resembling Lord Krishna, the troops fled away along with King Saguni.
Duryodhana rushed to defend his warriors from Abhimanyu but the valiant Abhimanyu engaged in attacking King Duryodhana gruesomely, making the Kaurava warriors quiver in front of a young kid. Breaking Duryodhana’s bow, Abhimanyu vanquished his uncle in the wink of an eye.
Smiling at Duryodhana, Abhimanyu said – “Uncle, worry not or feel humiliated for your defeat. I will not slay you. Uncle Bhīma has vowed to accomplish that. If not for his vow, I, myself, would have ended the battle here, right now! Be glad that uncle’s vow saved you from me! Go and live another day to see your defeat and death.”
King Bhagadatta on his elephant Supratika
Beholding Duryodhana standing defend less, King Bhagadatta rushed to the spot with his elephant and cloaked the chariot of Duryodhana from Abhimanyu and his darts. Filled with wrath, Abhimanyu sped an iron dart and it pierced the front lobe of the elephant’s head, making it fell lifeless on the ground. King Bhagadatta standing on ground, picking darts from his dead elephant’s back, started attacking Abhimanyu.
Witnessing Abhimanyu’s prowess and his talent and skill, proud Bhishma said unto Dronacharya –“Drona! Look at the prowess of that kid Abhimanyu. He defeated King Bhagadatta with just one dart which even Arjuna will not be able to do! He exceeds Arjuna and Karna in his archery skills. Duryodhana is standing against Abhimanyu, defend less. Go and protect the King and King Bhagadatta before Abhimanyu slays them.”
On the command of their generalissimo, Dronacharya, along with King Jayadratha, King Salya, Krpacharya, Aswathama and brothers of Duryodhana, rushed towards Abhimanyu. Beholding Drona and Aswathama, Abhimanyu’s legion fled in all directions. Standing on his chariot like Lord Krishna himself, Abhimanyu singly received the thousands and thousands of warriors rushing towards him with his showers of darts. Invoking celestial Astras, Abhimanyu slew hundreds of Kaurava cavalries and broke the bow of mighty Dronacharya with a crescent shaped arrow. Ceasing not, with his pointy darts, Abhimanyu made Vikarna unconscious, slew the steeds of the Avanti brothers, broke the bow of King Jayadratha and slew the charioteers of Aswathama and Vivinsati.  With loss of control, the chariot of Aswathama and Avanti brothers ran uncontrollably while the rest of the Kings fell unconscious in their chariot seats, struck by Abhimanyu. Amazed and admiring the mightiness of Abhimanyu, proud Bhishma praised him and bound to his duty, he sent elephant warriors against Abhimanyu.
Witnessing Abhimanyu battling against the most renowned warriors singly, proud King Yudhistra commanded Bhīma to defend Abhimanyu and he rushed against Bhishma to save the Panchala warriors. With 6000 elephant warriors and the UpaPandavas, Bhīma rushed to protect Abhimanyu. Beholding Bhīma, the frightened Kaurava warriors fled away. Using his elephant warriors as fence, Bhīma slaughtered the retreating warriors while Abhimanyu, standing on the other side, slew the receding warriors who were running towards him, trying to find a way out. Bhīma battled against Duryodhana while the UpaPandavas and King Nila slew the Kaurava cavalries and archers in hundreds. Dronacharya, who came in defense for Duryodhana showered arrows at Bhīma. Intensified with wrath, Bhīma sped a crescent shaped pointy dart at Dronacharya and deeply pierced, the Guru fell unconscious in his chariot. Beholding Dronacharya lying unconscious, his charioteer bore the chariot away from the field while Aswathama and Duryodhana rushed against Bhīma. Slaughtering the Kaurava elephant warriors hampering his way, with his mace in his hand, Bhīma rushed towards the approaching Duryodhana and Aswathama.
While the Kaurava warriors fled in all directions beholding Bhīma, Abhimanyu entered to defend Bhīma and showered his fiery darts, slaying or wounding the receding and non-receding foes while King Nila engaged in a duel with Aswathama. Responding to King Nila’s arrows, raged Aswathama with a broad headed dart, pierced King Nila in the chest and the wounded King fell unconscious in his chariot. Witnessing King Nila lying unconscious, Abhimanyu rushed towards Aswathama and consumed the Kaurava warriors like blazing meteorite and baffled Aswathama. Unable to withstand the viciousness of the heroic Abhimanyu, the Kaurava warriors retreated from the battlefield, in all possible directions, pressing and stepping on their own soldiers. Showering his darts on the retreating warriors, Abhimanyu slew thousands of cavalries, hundreds of archers and spear men and thousands of chariot warriors. Witnessing the fleeing warriors, Bhishma and Duryodhana rushed to their camp to unify the spiritless soldiers while the Pandava troops excited in their victory blew their conchs and beating their sword with their shield, they praised Abhimanyu .
Raged Duryodhana!
Meanwhile, in Kaurava’s camp, the Kings and the Princes unified their soldiers while Duryodhana explained Pithamaha about Abhimanyu’s prowess and his defeat. Filled with wrath, Duryodhana roared – “Not Arjuna or Bhīma or even the sons of Madri, but, that kid of Arjuna, Abhimanyu… he made me stand on the ground and insulted me in front of my army saying –‘Go and live another day!’ The Pandava troops are slaughtering my army like fire consuming insects. Pithamaha! I desire to slay that big headed Abhimanyu with my very own hands. Do whatever it takes to fulfill my wish.”
Staying calm, Bhishma said unto Duryodhana – “Duryodhana, you are a King. Behave like one and control your senses. According to the Mahayudh rules, as a King, you should fight against Kings only or with the Princes. Your battle should always be against Yudhistra and his brothers. If you desire Abhimanyu’s death, any King under you, on your command or mine, can slay him. You cannot achieve it. If that’s your wish, then, let King Bhagadatta proceed against him.”
“King Bhagadatta!? That Abhimanyu vanquished him with a single dart! You want me to send him to Abhimanyu again!? Whose side are you battling for, Pithamaha!?” – yelled Duryodhana.
As Pithamaha has got used to the yells of Duryodhana, unaffected on his words, Pithamaha continued- “Duryodhana, King Bhagadatta is better than Arjuna. He has got many celestial astras and he can slay Abhimanyu, if he is well defended.”
Nodding to Pithamaha’s words with rage, Duryodhana approved the plan and Pithamaha commanded King Bhagadatta to proceed against the heroic Abhimanyu. The Kaurava warriors returned to the battlefield on the command of their generalissimo, with rage and desire to victory.
King Bhagadatta's legion of elephants
Witnessing King Bhagadatta leading the army in his elephant Supratika and the Kaurava warriors rushing against the Pandavas with rage, on the command of Arjuna and under the leadership of Bhīma, the Pandava warriors raged against the approaching Kaurava warriors. Thus, flamed with rage, the soldiers of both the troops unveiled their talents and weaponry skills, crushing and slaying their foes. Hundreds fell lifeless as the chariot warriors unceasingly shot their pointy darts with greater energy. Spear-men and archers fell attacking each other in hundreds. King Bhagadatta, witnessing Bhīma approaching him, sped thousands of darts which pierced the followers of Bhīma, in different vital parts of their body while his mighty elephant was crushing the Pandava warriors nearby.
Responding to King Bhagadatta’s arrows, Bhīma slew thousands of Kaurava warriors who were defending Bhagadatta. With greater number of various celestial astras invoked by the chariot warriors and the Kings at the same time, the massacre was greater than any other day, so far in the battle. Together, King Bhagadatta and his elephant, breaking the array formed by the Pandavas, crushed thousands of spike men, foot soldiers and cavalries, along with their steeds. Beholding mighty Bhīma engaged in slaughtering the elephant warriors of the foe, heroic Abhimanyu stepped in to rescue his warriors from the darts of King Bhagadatta. Witnessing the most expected Abhimanyu approaching towards him, King Bhagadatta sped his golden lance at Abhimanyu, which, in the wink of an eye like lightning, Abhimanyu caught in his hands and imperturbably he sped it back at Supratika, the mighty elephant. Roaring aloud with wrath, Bhagadatta shot arrows at Abhimanyu and with serenity, Abhimanyu broke every single dart of it with his  darts, before even the darts could reach him or his warriors. Slaying the steeds and charioteer of Bhīma who came in defense for Abhimanyu, King Bhagadatta roared with delight while the Kaurava troops, witnessing Bhīma standing with his arm holding the golden mace, fled in fear, again.
Bhīma began to thrash the Kaurava warriors with his mace as Abhimanyu faced King Bhagadatta singly. Duryodhana, witnessing the chance to slay Abhimanyu, rushed towards the spot with his legion full of elephant warriors and cavalries, ignoring the words of Pithamaha. Before Duryodhana could reach Bhagadatta, Krishna, along with Arjuna in his chariot, came in defense for their favorite Abhimanyu. As Duryodhana was stopped by Arjuna, King Yudhistra came in defense for Abhimanyu and engaged in battling with Bhagadatta. Bhishma along with his legion went in defense for Duryodhana as Dronacharya, flanked by the brothers of Duryodhana rushed against Bhīma. King Amvastha engaged with the heroic Abhimanyu as Kritavarman rushed towards Satyaki. The battle got fierce disregarding the approaching sunset.
Witnessing Drona approaching towards him with the brothers of Duryodhana, raged like a firing dragon, Bhīma sped various darts towards those heroic souls. With a horse-shoe-headed dart, he slew Prince Vivinsati first and with a broad headed arrow, he slew Prince Kundalin. Emitting numerous arrows  from his bow unremittingly, Bhīma slew Anadhriti, Virajas, Dirghalochana, Dirghavahu, Suvahu and Kanykadhyaja, resisting Dronacharya’s darts at the same time. Beholding the prowess of Bhīma, the remnant brothers of Duryodhana fled from Bhīmas reach.
Vanquished by Abhimanyu, King Amvastha, who was standing on a grounded chariot, was rescued by Kritavarman. Bhishma, along with Krpacharya battled with Arjuna and the mighty heroes of both the armies slew foremost cavalries and Kings of their enemy side with their pointy darts. Without noticing the reddish sky above them, the warriors were battling viciously, with a desire for either victory or heaven.

Witnessing the brutality in the battlefield where the ground is filled with warriors holding their choice of weapon, lying either dead or deeply wounded, the elephants and steeds lying lifeless or moaning in pain and all those souls lying on ground painted in blood either pierced in their vital parts with spiky darts or smashed and crushed by elephants and the very ground itself filled with weapons like swords, lances, maces, darts and axes painted in blood, unable to bear the callousness and hardheartedness of humans, the sun set in the west, spreading darkness to the world, with a certainty that the darkness in human’s heart is thicker than the darkness that fills the night.
With the sunset, Pithamaha and other foremost warriors blew their conchs and the battle that was fought seeking the death of Abhimanyu came to an end. As Duryodhana and King Bhagadatta stood dejected on their failure, the exhausted warriors and animals of both the armies retired to their respective encampment, with heart and body not equipped for another day’s fight.
