Kurukshetra War - Day 14

Remembering the vow of Arjuna, the warriors woke up with terrified heart and prepared for the battle. On the command of King Yudhistra, the Pandava soldiers gathered for the array formation. Like a professional charioteer, Krishna equipped the chariot and his steeds and with Arjuna, he proceeded to the battlefield, leading the Pandava troops.
The treads of the horse hoofs and the clatter of the chariot wheels were heard as they reached the battlefield, signifying the array formation of the Kaurava warriors, desire of keeping Arjuna at bay. Arjuna, turning towards Satyaki, said –“Satyaki, as I have vowed to slay King Jayadratha today, I assign you with the duty of defending King Yudhistra. Protect the King with your entire prowess so that, I can whole heartedly engage in slaying King Jayadratha, worrying not about the King.”
Under the command of generalissimo Dronacharya, the Kaurava soldiers formed a combination of arrays. The front part with Dronacharya in the lead was Sakata (cart or box) Vyuha, which was 48 miles long and part circle (Chakra Vyuha), with diameter of 20 miles. The hind part was arrayed in the formed of the impenetrable Padma Vyuha (Lotus) and within the Vyuha was formed the Suchimukha (Needle) Vyuha where Kritavarman stood at the entrance, defending Duryodhana and Karna.
As Satyaki rushed to defend King Yudhistra, Arjuna scanned the vast Kaurava army, looking for King Jayadratha. Understanding the need of Arjuna, Krishna said- “Arjuna, I do not see King Jayadratha here. Also, Karna and Aswathama are not in the front. Looks like King Jayadratha is hidden somewhere, defended by those mighty warriors. Even foremost warriors like Duryodhana and Krpacharya are at the back of the rear-end array! Only if we get through them, you can slay King Jayadratha it seems.”
King Jayadratha, the ruler of Sindhu, as planned by Saguni and Duryodhana, hid himself protected by Aswathama, King Salya, King Saguni, Krpacharya and King Vrishasena and their platoons comprising 1,00,000 Knights, 60,000 chariots, 14,000 elephant warriors and 21,000 foot soldiers and archers. King Jayadratha was surrounded by his army comprising 7000 cavalries and 3000 chariots.
Beholding the complex array formed by the Kauravas and not knowing about the whereabouts of King Jayadratha, with the sunrise, blowing his conch, Arjuna asked Krishna to rush towards Durmarshana and Vikarna, who stood defending the Sakata array with a thousand chariots, 1500 elephant warriors, 3000 Cavalries, 10,000 armed foot soldiers and 1500 archers.
Showering a volley of darts at Durmarshana and his legion, like a lightning, Arjuna and Krishna penetrated into the Kaurava array, piercing Durmarshana and making him leave for the camp. None of the soldiers in the Kaurava army, who opposed Arjuna, lived to tell about the wrath of Arjuna that day. Striking off the arrows approaching his chariot, Arjuna rushed against Duchadhana who was blocking his path. Slaying the elephant warriors of Duchadhana’s legion and crushing Duchadhana’s elephant, Arjuna made Duchadhana flee, seeking Dronacharya’s protection.

Approaching Dronacharya, on the advice of Krishna, Arjuna seeks blessing from his preceptor to fulfill his vow today. Smiling at Arjuna’s morality, Dronacharya replied – “Vanquish me and you can defeat him!”
The duel between Arjuna and Dronacharya was fierce and awful that, they both slew thousands and thousands of soldiers with their shafts. Mighty Dronacharya, with his skill in archery, cut off the bow string of Arjuna, not knowing that the Gandiva has got 100 strings. Arjuna, invoking the Brahmana Astra, with thousands of shafts covered Dronacharya and his chariot and with his pointy shafts, he crushed ten thousand Kaurava warriors.
Knowing that the duel between Dronacharya and his disciple is going to be a never ending duel, Krishna adviced Arjuna- “Arjuna, let us proceed forward, not wasting time in battling Dronacharya.” Saying so, Krishna turned his chariot aside Drona and proceeded forward, protected by Panchala princes Yudhamanyu and Uttamauja.
Smashing the shafts of Arjuna that blockaded his view, Drona, on witnessing Arjuna leaving, said – “Arjuna, you never leave a duel in hand without defeating the foe!”
Bowing to Dronacharya, Arjuna replied – “You are my Guru and never my foe and to you, I will always be your disciple and son, like Aswathama.”
Smiling at Arjuna’s respect for him, Drona engaged in battling with the Kekayas and King Yudhistra. Aided by Arjuna, the Pandava soldiers penetrated into the Sakata array. Vikarna resisted Nakula while Prince Saumadatti (Son of Somadatta) who resisted the UpaPandavas was beheaded by Srutasena (Son of Sahadeva). Sahadeva slayed Trigartha Prince Niramitra and proceeded forward while Satyaki beheaded Magadha Prince Vyagradhatta and engaged in exterminating the Magadha army.
Meanwhile, Arjuna engaged with Kritavarman, King Srutayudha and King Sudhakshina of Kamboja. Krishna, on seeing Kritavarman standing against Arjuna, said –“Arjuna, forget your relation with Kritavarman and crush him. Do not show mercy!”
Stupefying Kritavarman with his showers of pointy darts, Arjuna proceeded forward against the Kamboja Kings. Kritavarman, cutting off the darts of Arjuna, engaged in resisting the Panchala princes who were defending Arjuna. Engaged in battling with King Srutayudha, Arjuna slew the steeds and the charioteer of King Srutayudha but was unable to slay the King. Beholding Arjuna showering darts filled with wrath, Krishna said – “Arjuna, Srutayudha cannot be slain by any of your weapon. His mother received a boon from Lord Varuna that Srutayudha can be slain only by his own mace when he hurls it at someone who is not battling.”
Hearing Krishna’s words, Arjuna broke the bow and sword of Srutayudha. Raged Srutayudha took his mace and hurled it at Arjuna. Krishna, standing up from his seat, received the blow on his shoulders and as a result of the boon, the mace returned to Srutayudha and hit him in his head and as a result, the King fell on the ground, deprived of life. Raged, Sudhakshina hurled a pointy spear at Arjuna which piercing his armor, entered the chest and made Arjuna collapse in his seat. Recovering quickly and invoking the Indra Astra, Arjuna crushed ten thousand Kamboja warriors and King Sudhakshina. Pierced in various vital body parts by numerous arrows, Sudhakshina fell lifeless on the ground and witnessing the death of the Kings, the Kamboja warriors fled in all directions.
As Arjuna penetrated into the unreceptive Kaurava army, the sun reached the meridian. Yudhistra who was resisted by Dronacharya was unable to proceed against his mighty Guru. Invoking the Brahmana Astra at Yudhistra, Dronacharya slew hundreds of Pandava warriors and also slew the steeds and charioteer of King Yudhistra. Defeated and standing on a grounded chariot with a broken bow, King Yudhistra was saved by Sahadeva as he took the King in his chariot and bore him away from Dronacharya before he could be seized by the Guru.
Meanwhile, invoking the mighty Sakra Astra, Arjuna slaughtered 600 Kaurava warriors along with the rulers of Amvashthas viz., King Srutayush and King Achyutayush. Ceasing not, with his pointy darts, he slew the warriors of Amvashthas numbering 6000 cavalries, a thousand Kshatriya chariot warriors and a thousand elephant warriors, along with their princes-Prince Niyatayush and Dirghayush who came rushing against him.
Duryodhana, on witnessing Arjuna’s prowess, rushed to Dronacharya and yelled – “Living under the roof of King Dritharashtra in Hastinapur, how can you engaged in bringing evil to us by seeking victory for the Pandavas? Your favourite disciple Arjuna is pounding my army! Do something to stop him!”
Smiling, Dronacharya replied – “Your words are true, Duryodhana. My heart supports dharma for Krishna is there with them. I, along with my platoon will engage in resisting the Pandavas from following the path of Arjuna. Unprotected by Arjuna, today I have an opportunity to seize Yudhistra as vowed and then the victory will be yours. You, along with Karna and Aswathama, engage in resisting Arjuna.”

The encounters in the afternoon were filled with malice and wrath. Drona, along with his defenders and legion, resisted the Pandava soldiers. King Salya engaged in battling against King Yudhistra while Duchadhana resisted Satyaki, Nakula and Sahadeva engaged in battling King Saguni and Dhrishtadyumna, exerting his mightiness, engaged in battling with Dronacharya. Bhīma dueled with King Jalasandha as defeating King Salya, King Yudhistra engaged with Kritavarman. Thousands were slain and hundreds of steeds and elephants were slain along with their riders, in both the sides.  Beholding Dhrishtadyumna standing on ground, vanquished by Dronacharya, Satyaki rushed to defend him and cut off the darts Drona was hurling at Dhrishtadyumna. With steadfast eyes, they both engaged in crushing the foes in hundreds. Cutting off the bow string of Drona, Satyaki invoked celestial astras repeatedly and slew thousands of Kaurava soldiers. As Duchadhana rushed to defend Drona, the four sons of Pandu engaged in defending Satyaki while Arjuna engaged in a fierce battle with Duryodhana.
Accompanied by Aswathama, Duryodhana engaged in piercing Arjuna and Krishna with his shafts. Witnessing no way to proceed forward, raged Arjuna shot shafts and made Duryodhana chariot less, not before slaying the steeds and the two charioteers and breaking the weapons of Duryodhana. Witnessing Duryodhana vanquished, Arjuna advanced forward, slaying the hundreds and hundreds of warriors who came in defending Duryodhana.
Satyaki against the Kaurava army
Hearing the shouts of the Kaurava warriors, terrified Yudhistra commanded Satyaki to advance promptly and defend Arjuna. Satyaki, assigning Bhīma to defend Yudhistra, proceeded looking for Arjuna, crushing the Kaurava army in front of him, aided by Dhrishtadyumna. Satyaki, who was advancing slaying hundreds of Kaurava warriors and seven foremost Kshatriya warriors, was checked by Drona. Satyaki, with bow in his hand and bowing to Drona – “A disciple walks in the path of his Guru. Like Arjuna, I will not engage in a fight, with you.”
Saying so, avoiding Drona, Satyaki proceeded towards Karna as Drona, who was pursuing Satyaki was resisted by the Son of Jarasandha and the Panchala warriors. Meanwhile, surrounded by the mighty warriors viz., Karna, Salya, Bhurisravas, Vrishasena and Aswathama, Arjuna engaged in a fierce battle. Breaking the bow of Salya and piercing him in the chest, Arjuna made him return to the camp and engaged in battling Bhurisravas. Accompanied by his brothers, Duryodhana engaged in resisting Satyaki. Raged and skilled Satyaki, after a long battle, slew the steeds and charioteer of Duryodhana and broke his bow. Before Satyaki could pierce him, Duryodhana was rescued by Chitrasena in his chariot as Sudarshana engaged with Satyaki.
Desirous of defending Arjuna, Satyaki beheaded Sudarshana with a razor faced arrow and slew the approaching Mleccha warriors in hundreds and thousands of Kamboja, Saka and Barbara warriors. Urged by Duryodhana, of all those who rushed against Satyaki, thousands fell lifeless on the ground along with a hundred chariot warriors and about five hundred warriors were wounded in various parts with few arms or legs cut off  by the pointy darts of Satyaki. Ceasing not, crushing a thousand elephant warriors, a thousand chariot warriors - both Maharathas and Rathas, three thousand archers, two thousand cavalries and ten thousand foot soldiers, Satyaki rushed towards Arjuna.
Meanwhile, Drona, slaying the son of Jarasandha and Panchala Prince Kshatradharman (Son of Dhrishtadyumna), engaged in crushing the Panchala army and proceeded towards King Yudhistra. Slaying 500 Trigartha warriors who rushed to defend Duchadhana and making Duchadhana stand on a grounded chariot, Satyaki rushed to Arjuna. Not hearing the blare of Krishna and Arjuna’s conch and also without the return of Satyaki, anxious King Yudhistra said – “Bhīma, go and see how Arjuna, Satyaki and Krishna is. Send a message through your conch, once you see them!”
Bhīma, placing Dhrishtadyumna as the defender of King Yudhistra, proceeded looking for Arjuna, Krishna and Satyaki. Crushing warriors with his mace at times and piercing the foes with his shafts at times, Bhīma received the brothers of Duryodhana who resisted him. With his pointy shafts, he made Kundabhedin, Suhastha, Dirghanetra and Vrindaraka fell lifeless on the ground. Ceasing not, showering infinite shafts continuously, Bhīma slew seven more brothers of Duryodhana viz., Abhaya, Raudrakarman, Durvimochana, Vinda, Anuvinda, Suvarman and Sudhakshin. Witnessing the death of the eleven Kaurava princes, the Kauarva army fled in all directions even after beholding Karna rushing towards Bhīma with rage.
Krishna taming the wounded horses!
Meanwhile, Yudhamanyu and Uttamauja, who rushed looking for Arjuna resisted Duryodhana who was also rushing to stop Arjuna. Slaying the steeds and charioteer of their foe, all the three battled fiercely. Soon as Salya came to rescue Duryodhana, Yudhamanyu and Uttamauja ascended another chariot of theirs and proceeded to defend Arjuna. Battling insignificantly with Bhīma, Karna pierced his foe with his shafts. Beholding Duryodhana’s brothers rushing with rage, remembering his vow, Bhīma, piercing Karna in the chest with a pointy dart, turned towards the rushing foes. Despatching 25 pointy arrows unceasingly, Bhīma slays Durmarshana, Duhsaha, Durmarsha, Durdhara and Jaya. Ceasing not, he slays the charioteer and steeds of Karna and with a hundred uninterrupted shafts, he made 6 brothers of Duryodhana viz., Chitra, Upachitra, Charuchitra, Sarasana, Chitrayudha, and Chitravarman fell lifeless.
Meanwhile, beholding Satyaki who was standing unarmed on a grounded chariot in battling against Bhurisravas, Krishna advised Arjuna to rescue Satyaki. Admiring at the prowess of Bhurisravas, Arjuna showered darts at his foe and in the meantime, Bhīma, after slaying five more brothers of Duryodhana viz., Satrunjaya, Satrusaha, Chitraksha, Dridhavarma and Chitrasena, engaged in battling against his favorite and beloved Vikarna.
Bhīma, with a caring heart, uttered - “Vikarna, you know dharma and you were the only one who spoke in favour of us and Draupathi in the court. Me, battling against you or slaying you is only because of my vow. Forgive me for my rage against you.”
On hearing the words of Bhīma, Vikarna replied – “Brother, don’t ask for forgiveness. What you are about to do is your Kshatriya duty. The reason we both are here is all for our love for our brother. Remember your Kshatriya duty and battle with me. I will be happy to die for my brother.”
Slaying Vikarna with his shafts, Bhīma engaged in battling with Karna. With his darts exhausted and no more darts to hurl, raged Bhīma descended from his chariot and threw the parts of dead elephants, steeds and chariots at Karna.  Cutting off those into fragments with his shafts, Karna covered Bhīma with his shafts. Though Karna’s darts could slay Bhīma, remembering his vow to Mother Kunti, Karna, touching the shoulder of Bhīma with his bow’s tip, said – “Never fight with warriors like me, Kid. Go and look for Krishna and Arjuna to defend you.”
Bhima throws an elephant at Karna
  Raged Bh
īma snatched the bow of Karna, hit Karna’s head with it and broke it. Beholding the weakness of Bhīma, Karna laughed at him and picking another bow, he again touched Bhīma in the shoulder with it and commanded his charioteer to proceed towards Arjuna. Wounded and raged Bhīma throws a dead elephant on Karna's chariot and ascended his chariot and rushed seeking Satyaki and Arjuna. Slaying Durmukhatmaja, the son of Durmukha, who resisted him, Bhīma rushed towards Arjuna who was rushing to defend Satyaki.
Arjuna’s darts, desire of rescuing Satyaki, cut off the right arm of Bhurisravas, who was rushing with his sword to slay Satyaki. Wounded Bhurisravas, beholding the unrighteous act of Arjuna, said – “How could you, one of the foremost warriors on earth, cut my arm when I am not battling with you? Why would you, under the guidance of Krishna do such an unworthy and sinful act?”
Though realizing his fault, Arjuna responded – “Satyaki is my disciple and it’s my duty to defend him, for he is here, battling with you all, for our sake. If I stand still and let him die, the sin will be mine! It is my vow that I will slay anyone who engages in slaying those belonging to my side, in front of my eyes. Why are you angry at me when you remained calm and neglected the righteousness when Abhimanyu was slain?”
Not able to accept the injustice caused to him, being a high souled Kshatriya, Bhurisravas desired to die according to the vow of Praya. Spreading an arrow bed with his left arm and dropping his weapons, Bhurisravas sat on the bed of arrows facing the sun and uttered the great Upanishad mantras and entered the world of meditation. As the soldiers of both the army spoke ill of Arjuna’s act, neither Krishna nor Arjuna disagreed them. Krishna, beholding Bhurisravas said – “Bhurisravas, you have been a good Kshatriya and a great human. You have performed various yaga for the welfare of your citizens. You have been righteous all your life. Without any delay, retire to the abode of mine and let your pure soul associate with me. Let your soul be borne by my Garuda!”
Offended on his near vanquish, raged Satyaki drew his sword and beheaded the sinless Bhurisravas, who was in Praya, ignoring the screams of disapproval from Krishna, Arjuna, Bhīma, Yudhamanyu, Uttamauja and other warriors.
Turning towards the Kauravas, Satyaki yelled –“Where was your justice when you all slew Abhimanyu? I have vowed that I would slay the one who defeats me, no matter what.”
As Satyaki kept screaming at the warriors, Arjuna, taking a deep breath, said unto Krishna – “Krishna, ride the chariot towards Jayadratha. The time for sunset is nearing.”
Beholding Arjuna proceeding, Duryodhana addressed Karna – “Karna, stop Arjuna by all possible means. The time for sunset is near. Delay him for few minutes and the victory will be ours.”
Though deeply hurt and wounded by the arrows of Bhīma, Karna, taking his friend’s word as a command, rushed to stop Arjuna and Krishna. Following him, Duryodhana, Vrishasena, King Salya, Aswathama and Krpacharya proceeded and surrounded Arjuna and Krishna on all sides and began to cover them with their shafts. Arjuna, desire of slaying Jayadratha, began to shower blazing darts at Karna and others. Slaying the steeds and charioteer of Karna and Vrishasena, Arjuna, began to consume the Kaurava warriors with his shafts.
Meanwhile, the red sun began to go down and darkness set in. Kaurava warriors, seeing the darkness setting in, cheered happily while the Pandava soldiers were filled with grief. As Duryodhana cheered with delight, preparations were made for Arjuna’s pyre and King Jayadratha, like everyone, rushed to witness Arjuna entering the pyre. Bowing to Bhīma and Krishna, Arjuna said – “Krishna, I vowed to enter pyre if I fail in slaying Jayadratha today. The fault is mine for I trusted only in my proficiency and not in you. Even without me, I know, my brothers can win this battle, as long as they have you. It is you who decide our destiny.”
Taking his Gandiva in hand, Arjuna walked towards the pyre as Duryodhana and his brothers, Aswathama and Jayadratha kept laughing at Arjuna. Meanwhile, darkness dispersed and bright and warm rays of sun filled the sky and the world. While everyone stood stunned on the unnatural act, Krishna smiling at everyone, said to Arjuna – “Arjuna, you would not be able to slay Jayadratha when he stays protected by these foremost warriors. With my ascetic powers, I created darkness by covering the sun with my Sudharsana chakra. Behold, in front of you, Jayadratha is standing undefended. He will not be able to hide from you anymore. Avail this opportunity and behead him before the sun sets.”

Holding his Gandiva high, delighted Arjuna began to fix an Astra as the Kaurava warriors rushed to save Jayadratha. Jayadratha, seeing his death in front of his eyes, tried to pacify Arjuna – “Arjuna, if you slay me, you will also die. Anyway, you are going to die and the Pandavas are going to lose. So spare me… I will not fight in the battle anymore!”
As the Pandava army stood perplexed, not understanding the words of Jayadratha, Krishna said – “Jayadratha’s father, King Vriddhakshatra, devoted to ascetic austerities, received a boon that the one who causes the head of Jayadratha to fell on earth will blow into hundred pieces. He is engaged in penance in the forest of Samantapanchaka. So, using your Astra, behead Jayadratha and aim in such a way that the Astra will carry the head of Jayadratha and fall on the laps of his father.”
Hearing the words of Krishna, delighted Arjuna aimed his Astra at Jayadratha as the Kaurava warriors began to take measures to cease the Astra from reaching Jayadratha. Like a lightning, before anyone could even blink their eye or react, Arjuna’s perfectly-aimed dart sped from Gandiva and beheaded Jayadratha. Snatching the severed head away from the battlefield, the Astra, as ordered by Arjuna, fell on the lap of Vriddhakshatra. Vriddhakshatra, who was sitting in penance, opened his eyes after the prayers and stood up in terror to see his son’s head on his lap. As a result of his fear, the head fell on earth and Vriddhakshatra got blown up into pieces.
King Vriddhakshatra
Cheated by the illusion of Krishna and beholding Jayadratha slain, Duryodhana, Aswathama and Krpacharya covered Arjuna with their shafts. Feeling satisfied in accomplishing his vow, Arjuna, with no desire to slay any of his foes for the day, Arjuna cut off those shafts and sped no darts at them. In the meantime, Krishna blew his conch indicating the sunset, for real, and following him, Satyaki and Arjuna too blew while Bh
īma blew his conch indicating the victory of Arjuna to King Yudhistra and to the world. With Dronacharya and Karna blowing their conch and drums beaten, the day’s battle came to end and satisfied Arjuna, after destroying 5 Akshauhinis of the Kaurava army and Jayadratha, returned to his camp with Krishna and his warriors.

Kurukshetra War - Night 13

“Shame on my sons and grandsons! They have fought without any honor.Opposing the illustrious Dronacharya, Karna, Duryodhana, Duchadhana, Kritavarman, Krpacharya, Aswathama and many other mighty warriors and Kings singly, breaking the Chakra Vyuha and slaughtering my army, this son of Arjuna, Abhimanyu is really a hero, Sanjaya. Feeling proud of that grandson of mine endued with the mightiness of Krishna, Balram and Arjuna. How did even Dronacharya and Karna support this slaughter?” –King Dhritarashtra cried to Sanjaya sitting in his throne.

"I have raised only beasts! How did they even have the heart to slaughter him after seeing such a young and smiling face, that too their own nephew!? Definitely, the death of my sons is sure in the hands of Arjuna and Bhīma. Abhimanyu’s massacre will surely agitate the Pandavas and the army of our son is going to be turned into ashes in the hands of Arjuna.” – cried Queen Gandhari.
“Sanjaya, tell me what happened in the Pandavas camp. Has Arjuna returned to the camp? If Arjuna and Krishna gets to know the humiliating way by which Abhimanyu was slaughtered, O God, I have no courage to even imagine the consequence.” – quivered King Dhritarashtra in fear.
“O King, the Pandavas have not even removed their armors. Every single warrior of the Pandava army is seated around the lifeless body of Abhimanyu, with wounds unattended, blood dripping from the open wounds and some even with the pierced arrows left unpluck from their armor. Even King Yudhistra has not moved an inch. He, his brothers and the UpaPandavasare crying all day. Queen Draupathi and Subhadra, along with Matha Kunti and Uththirai are also seated next to Abhimanyu who was lying lifeless. Listen carefully…as I can see Arjuna and Krishna approaching.”
Meanwhile, in Kurukshetra, filled with grief, the Pandava army was seated around their King and deceased heroic Abhimanyu.
Filled with grief, King Yudhistra wept – “Abhimanyu! My brave child was slaughtered right in front of my eyes and I was unable to do anything to save him. How can I myself as a King? I have failed as a father in protecting my son. As a cruel and greedy father, I have placed my own son in the chariot and made him enter the battlefield when he is supposed to be enjoying the life and the wealth, in his palace, in his silk divan…with his family and friends. Desiring my victory, you have lost your life, for me! O Son, this throne is supposed to be yours! What am I going to say to your father, Abhimanyu? I have no courage to look into the eyes of Arjuna and Krishna. Arjuna will burn us to ashes through his looks, when he gets to know that we let his heroic son into the Vyuha. I have no answers for the questions he is going to ask. I do not have the nerve to even look at him. He left you in my hands, son! He left the battlefield hoping that we all will protect you. What will I tell him now? Even my death or defeat in this battle is not going to trouble me anymore. Why not I was killed so that you could live?”

In the meantime, after battling against the army of Samsaptakas exceedingly, Krishna and Arjuna returned to Kurukshetra in their chariot. “Madhava, has something happened to my brothers in the battle today? I feel a strange pain and burden in my heart. My mind is disturbed and fear has engulfed me totally. My mind is restless and I feel nervous without any reason.”
Krishna, who knows the unknown, said – “Worry not, Arjuna. Your brothers are safe.”
The chariot reached the camp. Beholding the camp deprived of warriors and cheers; Arjuna got suspicious and spoke with a depressed heart –“Krishna! Why is the camp so silent? Where is everyone? What happened to my brothers? Where are they? My mind is filled with worries and fear, Krishna. Where is my son? Why is he not waiting for me in front of the camp to receive me and share the stories of his mightiness in the battlefield? Has something happened to my brothers or to the Panchala Prince?”
Seeing Krishna’s silence and seriousness in his face, Arjuna’s heart began to beat faster and was filled with unknown fear, worries and pain. As soon as Krishna and Arjuna descended from the chariot and entered the camp, they saw the warriors sitting with their heads lowered. Looking at Arjuna, they stood up with depressed face, lowered eyes and spoke not a word. None spoke about their achievements in the battlefield. With fear running through his spine, Arjuna proceeded to the center of the camp where he saw the warriors filled with grief. He was able to see his brothers, with teary eyes and agony, sitting in front of a lifeless body. None lifted their head as they were all seated deprived of their senses. Fear struck, Arjuna rushed towards his brothers. Seeing Arjuna rushing at them, everyone rose from the ground and wept aloud, unable to control themselves. With a heavy heart, pushing aside everyone standing in his way, Arjuna ran to see the face of the mighty warrior lying lifeless.
Beholding Abhimanyu lying lifeless on the ground, Arjuna was speechless. He felt like his world has trembled and broken into pieces. Deprived of his senses, with pain and agony filling his heart and weakened legs, he fell on the ground wailing aloud. Arjuna’s cry echoed among the mountains and filled the hearts of the warriors with agony.
Gathering his strength, Arjuna spoke in choked voice - “What happened to my son? I left him hoping you four will protect him. How was he slain when his fathers are nearby? Tell me how my son was slain in the battlefield when his prowess is equal to the mighty Krishna. There’s no single soul on earth mighty enough to slay my son. Even there can be warriors like Karna, Bhishma and Dronacharya to slay…. to slay me, but not my son! Abhimanyu was trained by Krishna, Balram, Pradyumna and me! Having learnt from such foremost warriors, my son is undefeatable in the battle. How it is that such a mighty warrior is lying lifeless now? Who did this to my son? Answer me, someone, before my heart explodes in pain.”
Abhimanyu ...the  unsurpassed hero!
King Yudhistra, with eyes filled with tears and heart filled with agony explained about Abhimanyu’s prowess inside the Chakra Vyuha and the death of Abhimanyu. Listening to his son’s mightiness, Arjuna, filled with grief and feeling proud spoke – “My son will definitely reach heaven for his heroic achievement today. Unforgettable feat which even I or Karna will never be able to achieve. Forget about others, how and from when did Dronacharya and Karna became such cruel in their heart? From when did their heart turn such filthy to pierce such a soft heart with pointed arrows?”
The cries of the Pandavas were heard in the Kaurava camp and Duryodhana was informed about the arrival of Arjuna to the camp. Expecting the moment, Duryodhana, along with his brothers and drums came outside their camp and laughed hysterically with pride. Yuyutsu, son of King Dhritarashtra who sided with the Pandavas, on listening to the indecent mockery and behavior of his brothers, rose in anger and rushed to them.  With harsh words, he said aloud–“You all call yourself warriors after slaying a child?! He opposed you all singly like a lion whereas you all, attacked him like wolves and are enjoying the moment when you all are supposed to be afraid of facing Arjuna’s mightiness tomorrow in the battlefield. Your cruelty has poisoned the hearts of the mighty Dronacharya and Karna too. Don’t you see that the only goodness left in your side has been sinned? You all will definitely face the effects of your sinful act. Dare not, call yourselves a warrior or even a Kshatriya!”
Thus, with raged heart and words, Yuyutsu left the place and entered the Pandavas camp. Hearing Yuyutsu’s words, Karna and Dronacharya, who were already ashamed of their act felt mortified. They didn’t even leave their bivouac to celebrate for the day’s victory or to discuss about tomorrow’s battle strategies. With raged heart after being insulted by their brother, Duryodhana and his brothers left to their tent. The Kaurava warriors feared Arjuna might call for battle in night.
Arjuna, filled with grief, spoke –“What did you all do standing there in the battlefield when my son was being slaughtered? What happened to your weapons: King Yudhistra’s spike, brother Bhīma’s mace, Nakula and Sahadeva’s sword, bow and arrows and also, other mighty Kings? If I had known that you all were weak and not mighty as you all were known for, I would have stayed behind, protecting my son. Believing in you weaklings, I went away leaving my precious soul under your protection. What were you fathers doing wearing a golden suit of armor, standing in your respective gold-decked chariot filled with shiny and sharp weapons? What happened to all your mightiness? What happened to the words that you all assured me?”
None had the nerve to look at Arjuna or even explain to him. Krishna alone soothed Arjuna by patting the shoulders of Arjuna, with no words spoken. Arjuna was filled with rage on his brothers and blamed them for the death of Abhimanyu. Yudhistra, with lowered head spoke –“Arjuna! We take the blame for our son’s death. Packed with energy, enthusiasm, skill and talent, as your son proceeded into the Vyuha, we were stopped by King Jayadratha. He separated us from our son.” Yudhistra thus spoke the day’s battle and the way King Jayadratha ceased the four brothers from entering the Vyuha.
“You four mighty warriors and your entire platoon were not able to slay or even defeat one King!!?”- yelled Arjuna.
Jayadratha and his boon from Lord Siva
Krishna, consoling Arjuna, spoke – “Arjuna, what your brother says is true. After being humiliated by Bhīma in the forest, King Jayadratha practiced severe austerity desirous of a boon from Lord Shiva. When Lord Shiva was pleased and appeared in front of him, he asked for a boon that he should be able to defend the sons of Pandavas, singly, in the battlefield. It was only because of this boon, your brothers were unable to defend Abhimanyu.”
Hearing the words of Krishna, enraged Arjuna yelled – “That wicked Jayadratha! Wretched soul on earth! Tomorrow I will slay that wretch in my own hands. I will dispatch him to hell for his malevolent act. If, by tomorrow’s sunset he is alive, I will enter into pyre and reach heaven along with my son. And this is my vow.”
Vowing in front of everyone, Arjuna, filled with rage rushed towards his bivouac. Hearing his vow, the Pandava army blew their conches and produced a loud shriek that made the Kaurava army to quiver in fear. Duryodhana’s spies informed Duryodhana about Arjuna’s vow. Fear struck, Jayadratha said –“Duryodhana! Arjuna is raged and he will definitely take his vow seriously. Without doubt, he will kill me for he has sworn on his son. Allow me, I will leave the camp and hide myself somewhere deep inside the forest or even beneath the mountains where he will not find me.”
Duryodhana calmed Jayadratha and said –“O King! Calm down. No matter where you go, Arjuna will find you and kill you. The one and only safe place for you is among us. With mighty warriors in our side, to protect you, why are you afraid of one single bowman? You are a Kshatriya. Disperse your fear.”
Saying so, Duryodhana and Jayadratha along with the wicked council members like Saguni, Duchadhana, Aswathama and Karna left to generalissimo Dronacharya’s bivouac to discuss about defending Jayadratha. Meanwhile, while they were discussing, King Yudhistra’s messenger reached Dronacharya’s tent looking for Duryodhana.
“King Duryodhana! Dronacharya! Kindly, accept my respect. I am here carrying a message from King Yudhistra. Mighty Arjuna has vowed to slay King Jayadratha in the battle tomorrow. And so, in order to protect the life and happiness of their sister, King Yudhistra has requested the King and army general to protect King Jayadratha, the son-in-law of the Kuru family.”
With permission from Dronacharya, the messenger left the tent. Duryodhana, surprised on King Yudhistra’s act said- “Is King Yudhistra such a mighty soul!? Knowing the consequence of the failure of the vow, yet he has informed us about protecting Jayadratha. With Arjuna’s death, they will lose the war. Knowing this, he has asked us to save Jayadratha! All because of his love for our sister, Dussala? I admire his heart! Willing to lose his brother to save the life, happiness and future of his sister! Esteemed soul he is!”
“Duryodhana, now that the King himself has confirmed, focus on my safety. Else, sure, Arjuna will slay me.” – quivered King Jayadratha.
“Fear not, O King. It’s not noble for a Kshatriya to leave the battlefield out of fear for his life. Our mighty warriors will fight for protecting you from Arjuna. Observe the Kshatriya duties and set your heart in the battle, O King.”- consoled Dronacharya.
“Allied with Krishna, Arjuna is definitely mighty and unstoppable. No matter what ever battle strategies you apply, he will definitely break it. Filled with wrath, the Pandavas are waiting for my death. Arjuna, out of his confidence, has vowed to even fall into a pyre.” – said restless Jayadratha.
Saguni, who was sitting serene, on listening to Jayadratha’s words, lifted his head and said – “Arjuna has vowed to kill himself, right! This really is a great opportunity.  If he dies, the Pandavas will lose the war. Duryodhana will win the war!”
King Jayadratha...all set to hide!
Hearing Saguni’s words, exhilarated Duryodhana turned towards Dronacharya and said – “Dronacharya! Our leader! Form a mighty array that the Pandavas will find it tough to break. As of Jayadratha, protect him with the help of our mighty chariot warriors, Maharathas and soldiers. Let’s hide him somewhere and make sure Arjuna never finds out. With sunset, unable to find him, Arjuna will enter the pyre. I will win!” – ceasing not, turning towards King Jayadratha, he continued- “O King Jayadratha! Fear not for it’s a great chance for us to win the battle. Hide yourself and do not come out of the place until sunset. You will be protected by mighty heroes like Karna, Aswathama and Krpacharya. Those heroes untied together are not easy to defeat...even by Arjuna.”
King Jayadratha, understanding the strategy of Duryodhana too got cheered – “Great plan, Duryodhana! Victory will be ours by tomorrow’s sunset! Through me, you will get the victory you desire!”
Dronacharya and the council formed strategies to protect King Jayadratha and also to stop the Pandava army. None slept in the Pandavas camp out of fear, ‘What if Arjuna fails!?’, whereas, those in the Kauravas camp too slept not as they were filled with terror to face the raged Arjuna in the battle tomorrow. Dronacharya and Karna, knowing what will happen for sure tomorrow no matter what and realizing that their efforts will fail in front of Krishna, remembering their promises to Duryodhana they executed their plan to defend Jayadratha. The night, indeed, was long and disturbing in both the camps.

Kurukshetra War - Day 13

Abhimanyu and Arjuna!
Left with only 2 Akshauhinis, the Pandavas prepared for the thirteenth day of the battle, not aware of the vile and cruel strategy of the Kauravas. Finishing their morning prayers, the Sons of Pandu gathered along with Krishna, Dhrishtadyumna and the Kings to discuss about the day’s battle. Meanwhile, rushing into the tent and bowing at everyone gathered, the Pandava scout said- “King Yudhistra, forgive me for my offensive entry. The Trigartha warriors, under their King Susarman are marching towards Virata Kingdom, summoning Prince Arjuna for a battle.”
“What an unfair move by King Susarman! King Yudhistra, permit me to leave the battlefield. I have to defend my people.” – urged King Virata.
“King Virata, if you leave the battlefield, your soldiers too have to follow you. We already have very few soldiers.”-said Krishna.
“But Krishna, what about the innocent citizens of Virata?” – said depressed King Virata.
“Indeed, O King. But if your army leaves the battlefield, it will be a definite loss for King Yudhistra today. Moreover, they have summoned Arjuna. Singly, Arjuna can vanquish them! He crushed the Trigartha warriors yesterday in the battle. Sure he can repeat the same. Arjuna and I will go and battle with the Trigartha army before they could reach the gates of Virata. You and your army defend King Yudhistra without worrying about your Kingdom. Your Kingdom is safe in the hands of the world’s mightiest warrior!”-said Krishna.
Pleased on hearing the words of Krishna, the Kings and generals rushed to prepare their legion for the battle while Krishna and Arjuna left towards Virata Kingdom, to crush the Trigarthas.
With the hour for sunrise nearing, both the armies gathered in the battlefield. With sun rising in the east spreading his first ray of light and warmth to the world, witnessing the 7 Akshauhinis of the Kaurava warriors arrayed in the form of the unassailable Chakra Vyuha, the world of the Pandavas darkened. Fear and panic filled their heart as even King Yudhistra stood speechless. Dronacharya stood at the center of the Vyuha, deeply humiliated at his act.
Kauravas in Chakra Vyuha
The Chakra Vyuha formed by Dronacharya appeared like a death trap meant for the Pandavas. Placing Duryodhana in the center, defended by the foremost warriors like Dronacharya, Karna, Duchadhana, Krpacharya and Saguni, the Kaurava warriors were filled with courage, delight and guarantee of victory. The brothers of Duryodhana formed the next circle of defense headed by Aswathama and the next two levels were defended by King Salya and King Bhurisravas, respectively.
“Brother, Dronacharya has formed the indestructible Chakra Vyuha knowing that no one will be able to break it, except Arjuna! And that’s why the Trigarthas purposely removed Arjuna away from the battlefield!” – said raged Bhīma.
“Even if we break the array and enter, we will not be able to come out and we will lose our entire army! Breaking all those circles, it’s not going to be easy for us to reach the center where Duryodhana, Dronacharya, Karna and the mighty foremost warriors of the Kaurava army are standing.”- added Sahadeva.
Before King Yudhistra could respond, the conches were blown and drums were beaten, indicating the start of the day’s battle and the mighty Kaurava warriors rushed towards the fear struck Pandavas and their army.
“Our warriors are strong and standing courageous. Proceed towards Duryodhana and his warriors, my soldiers! Let’s break that array and slay Dronacharya today.”- yelling at his soldiers, Dhrishtadyumna rushed against the Kaurava soldiers. The battle was fierce and terrible to witness and unable to face the prowess of the Kings and foremost warriors of the Kaurava army, the Pandava soldiers fled in all directions. Dronacharya, Karna, Aswathama and the foremost archers of the Kaurava army were crushing the Pandava troops by showering pointy darts unceasingly.
“Seems, by sunset not a single Pandava soldier will be alive! There is no way for us to attack Dronacharya, Karna and Duryodhana. Only if they are engaged by us, they will stop crushing our army! But how can we go near them when we do not have Arjuna here, the only person who can penetrate into the mighty Vyuha and also lead us out safely!” – said disheartened King Yudhistra.
Unable to witness his soldiers being slain and King Yudhistra’s helplessness to rescue them, the mighty heroic Abhimanyu said –“Father taught me how to penetrate. Permit me to enter, father.”
Hearing Abhimanyu’s words, stunned Bhīma responded -“No son! You are not aware of the tactics to keep the array open and also the manner to exit it.”
“Bhīma is right, Abhimanyu. Your father left you under our protection. We will think of a way to break the array. I would rather accept defeat than to lead you into this trap.” – said King Yudhistra.
“O Father, I am Abhimanyu, the son of mighty Arjuna and nephew of the illustrious Krishna. Those Kaurava warriors are no match to my prowess. It is not fair for me to just stand here and witness my army being crushed. My father would not have stood patiently. And if he knows about this, he will definitely accuse me for doing nothing. I would even accept death trying to defend my soldiers rather than standing here with my bow. I will penetrate into the array and bring out those foremost warriors of the Kaurava army. Kindly allow me. There is no other way to save our soldiers.” – insisted Abhimanyu.
After tenacious insisting by Abhimanyu, King Yudhistra and Bhīma agreed to Abhimanyu’s words, saying – “Abhimanyu, you are mightier, stronger and talented than Arjuna. But to us, you are still a kid… our future. We will have our eyes fixed on you. Bhīma, Dhrishtadyumna and we all will be your protectors for today. Break the array and we will follow you closely and will make sure that the array is kept open so that you can return safely to us.”
“Your victory is what father and uncle Krishna desire! To ensure your victory, I will do everything conceivable. I will penetrate into the array and defeat Karna and Dronacharya and give path for father Bhīma to slay the brothers of uncle Duryodhana. Today everyone will witness the prowess of a sixteen year old kid!” – Saying so, Abhimanyu commanded his charioteer – “Sumitra, urge the steeds to enter the Vyuha.”
Holding the ropes of the steeds, Sumitra, the concerned charioteer said –“Abhimanyu, I request you to reconsider about you entering the Vyuha. What rests on your shoulders is heavier than what you think it is. You are not skilled and experienced in the science of battle like Dronacharya or Karna. Behold him forming the indestructible array today especially when your father Arjuna is not here!”
Laughing at the words of his charioteer, Abhimanyu responded with pride – “O Sumitra, you have seen me battling! I have defeated my uncle Duryodhana and also have slain many foremost Kings and warriors in this battle. I am son of the mightiest archer of all time. I was trained by illustrious warriors like uncle Krishna, uncle Balram, Pradyumna and my father! The whole of Kaurava army in front of me not even matches to one sixteenth of my power! I am not afraid even if I get my mighty father or even the almighty Krishna as my challenger. Steer the steeds towards Dronacharya!”
As his charioteer urged the golden armored steeds towards the Kaurava army drearily, Abhimanyu, knowing what he is doing, said – “Just like a moth flying into an erupting volcano!”
Abhimanyu entering the Chakra Vyuha
Beholding Abhimanyu leading the Pandava army, Drona commanded the troops to cease Abhimanyu and also ordered King Jayadratha to cease the rest of the Pandava troops from following Abhimanyu. Showering his darts at the resisting warriors and penetrating into the Vyuha valiantly in the very sight of Duryodhana and Dronacharya, Abhimanyu began to consume the Kaurava troops like forest fire. As Abhimanyu entered the Vyuha and began to crush it leaving his entrance wide open for the Pandava troops to enter, King Yudhistra, Bhīma, Nakula, Sahadeva, the UpaPandavas, Satyaki, Dhrishtadyumna, Sikandi, King Virata, King Drupada and their platoon rushed to defend their beloved Abhimanyu. Witnessing the Pandava troops desirous of saving Abhimanyu, King Jayadratha blocked the opening of the array with darts by invoking celestial weapons. Endowed by the boon* he received from Lord Shiva, singly, King Jayadratha engaged in resisting his antagonists and succeeded in separating them from Abhimanyu.
Jayadratha against the Pandava army
Piercing every single foremost warrior of the Pandava troops with his sharp arrows and King Yudhistra with seven darts, King Jayadratha covered the Pandava troops with his shafts, making them unable to move forward.  King Yudhistra, raged, cut off the bow of Jayadratha but, like lightning, taking up another bow, Jayadratha pierced Yudhistra with ten more darts and made him tremble. Fumed Bhīma cut off the bow and standard of Jayadratha’s chariot and responding to that, Jayadratha, taking another bow, cut off Bhīma’s bow, standard, charioteer and steeds. Beholding Bhīma vanquished by Jayadratha, the Kaurava troops cheered with loud shouts while Bhīma ascended the chariot of Satyaki. Blockading the entrance created by Abhimanyu with the lifeless bodies of the Pandava soldiers and animals, boasting himself, King Jayadratha laughed at the Sons of Pandu. Witnessing King Jayadratha’s prowess, the Kaurava troops cheeringly engaged in resisting the heroic Abhimanyu who was causing chaos for their army.
Singly and audaciously proceeding towards the foremost warriors of the Kauravas, wounding the advancing Kaurava soldiers in thousands and slaying in hundreds, Abhimanyu crushed everything and everyone in his path. With arms cut off or legs pierced or beheaded or arrows pierced in the neck, hundreds of Kaurava soldiers laid lifeless on the ground, signifying that Abhimanyu has crossed that section of the Vyuha.  Facing all kinds of the warriors, viz., elephant warriors, foot soldiers, spike men, chariot warriors, cavalry archers, siege weapons, Knights and archers, and crushing them daringly, Abhimanyu appeared impressive and implanted fear in the hearts of the Kaurava warriors.
Witnessing the prowess of Abhimanyu and Dronacharya standing excited and proud at the feat achieved by Abhimanyu, raged Duryodhana rushed against Abhimanyu. Even after witnessing Duryodhana, the terrified Kaurava soldiers fled in all directions. Seeing Duryodhana’s unexpected move, Dronacharya addressed – “Proceed to defend Duryodhana. Abhimanyu is furious and raged. He might even slay the King.”
Hearing Dronacharya’s command Aswathama, Krpacharya, Karna, King Saguni, King Salya, Kritavarman and Vrishasena engaged in showering arrows at Abhimanyu and defended Duryodhana who was baffled by the unceasing arrows of Abhimanyu. Responding to all those darts and in return piercing every single one of them with his pointy darts, Abhimanyu slew the Son of Asmaka of Asmaka Kingdom, not before slaying his steeds and charioteer.
Ceasing not, valiant Abhimanyu pierced Karna with three darts in the chest and made him lose hold of his bow and with three more darts, he made Sushena, Drigalochana and Kundavedhin fell unconscious, not before he made the invincible King Salya swoon in his chariot. Raged at his brother lying unconscious, Salya’s brother pierced Abhimanyu with rage. Smiling at the rage of his foe, raising his bow and with series of darts, Abhimanyu slew the charioteer and the steeds, cut off the head of Salya’s brother and turned the chariot into dust. Beholding their King slain, Madra warriors rushed against Abhimanyu yelling–“Slay Abhimanyu!”. Smiling at the fearless Madra soldiers, Abhimanyu showered darts which pierced the armor and entered the body of the soldiers like red-hot iron rod.
Abhimanyu against Karna!
Beholding the prowess of Abhimanyu, excited and elated Dronacharya said unto Krpacharya – “That kid is a delight to watch! He surpassed every single warrior’s feat. Even mine and Arjuna’s! Look at him… noble, firm minded and handsome like Krishna, talented and modest like Arjuna, humble like Yudhistra, deeds surpassing Bhīma, well cultured and polite like Nakula and Sahadeva…Oh…he is an incarnation of all the noble qualities of Krishna and the Sons of Pandu. Look at the way he is showering his darts! I can see that he is being soft and modest to the soldiers. With this much talent, if only he is raged like Bhīma, he could annihilate the whole army. But I think he does not wish to… as a respect to Arjuna and Bhīma! I have seen Arjuna’s progress in talent and skill, but this Kid...he amazes me! At this young age, he has got everything what Arjuna has learnt in all these years!”
Duryodhana, who was standing helpless and raged at Abhimanyu’s prowess, witnessing Dronacharya’s excited face, fumed in anger and rushed to Karna and Duchadhana and said –“Look at our generalissimo Dronacharya. Full of proud and delight! Trust me…he doesn’t even want to slay that kid. Especially cause Abhimanyu is his favorite disciple Arjuna’s son! Only we have to do something to slay him.”
Desirous of slaying Abhimanyu, raged Duchadhana, rushing against Abhimanyu addressed aloud –“Brother, witness me slaying this Kid today. With this kid gone, Arjuna and Krishna too will leave this world, having no desire to live. With that, the Sons of Pandu and Draupathi will also enter the pyre. You will be King by tomorrow!”
Hearing the words of Duchadhana, King Yudhistra and his brothers yelled at him to stop battling against Abhimanyu. As much as they tried, their efforts to proceed into the Vyuha failed. Laughing at the inability of the Sons of Pandu, Duchadhana proceeded against Abhimanyu and seeing his unexpected move, disheartened Dronacharya worried about Abhimanyu, remembering Duryodhana’s plan. Beholding Duchadhana rushing at him, Abhimanyu said- “You have insulted Matha Draupathi and spoke ill of her and my fathers. And also you behaved despicably when uncle Krishna was in Hastinapur for peace talks.  Today, I will free myself from the burden of rage I hold in my heart for you and the debt I owe to my beloved uncle, fathers and Matha Draupathi, as a son. If you want to live without shame, leave the battlefield right now. Fear not for I will not slay you. I remember the vow of mighty Bhīma and that’s the suitable way for you to die.”
Enraged on hearing the words of Abhimanyu, Duchadhana engaged in showering darts at Abhimanyu.  Responding to those darts, Abhimanyu continuously poured shafts at his foe and pierced him in vital parts. Like a raged elephant, Duchadhana battled against Abhimanyu but he was no match to Abhimanyu’s prowess. Abhimanyu’s golden winged dart targeted for the shoulder-joint of Duchadhana penetrated into the body up to the very wings and made him lose hold of the bow. Ceasing not, Abhimanyu struck him with seven more darts and made Duchadhana fell unconscious in his seat. Duchadhana’s charioteer immediately rode the chariot away from Abhimanyu as fast as he could.
Witnessing Abhimanyu’s prowess, the Pandavas and their army cheered and uttered loud shouts. Filled with delight, they rushed against King Jayadratha audaciously. Raged and insulted on Abhimanyu’s prowess, Duryodhana said –“Karna, this kid defeated my mighty Duchadhana! He is insulting me with his bow and his prowess.”
In order to defend Duryodhana, Karna rushed against Abhimanyu showering his darts. Though pierced by Karna’s darts, feeling no pain and desirous of battling against Dronacharya to break the array, with his razor sharp darts Abhimanyu cut off the standard and umbrella and slew the charioteer and steeds of Karna. Hurling a dart even before the mighty Karna could recognize, Abhimanyu cut off his bow and pierced him with three shafts and the duel between Karna and Abhimanyu ended in few minutes.
Witnessing Abhimanyu’s prowess, delighted Dronacharya said – “Krpacharya, see that kid’s skill in archery! Amazing feet! Even Arjuna, under Krishna’s guidance was unable to vanquish Karna but this kid…he achieved it singly! His archery skill is far superior to Arjuna’s and Karna’s! Battling singly against the whole army from sunrise and yet he does not even look exhausted or cheerless!”
Meanwhile, to defend Karna, his younger brother Shone proceeded against Abhimanyu. Receiving Shone with a smiled face, the daring Abhimanyu beheaded Shone with a single dart and engaged in showering darts at Karna before he could grasp his breath. Seeing Karna’s helplessness, his charioteer bore the chariot away from the field. Smiling for his victory, Abhimanyu showered darts at the Kaurava soldiers incessantly. The soldiers suffered like insect consumed by the forest fire.
Breaching the indestructible Chakra Vyuha’s core and blowing his conch indicating his success, Abhimanyu engaged in crushing the warriors in his path of reaching Dronacharya and Duryodhana. The battle was fierce and brutal to witness. Slaying the charioteer of Vrishasena and sending Vrishasena away from the field and slaying King Vasatiya of Vasati Kingdom with an iron dart, Abhimanyu engaged with the mighty brothers of Duryodhana and the foremost kings and princes of the Kaurava army. Capturing Prince Satvasravas, Abhimanyu slew hundreds of soldiers approaching him. Rukmaratha, son of Salya who rushed to rescue his friend lost his hands and head to Abhimanyu’s darts and fell lifeless on the ground. Madra Princes and warriors rushed against Abhimanyu with rage but, like lightning, Abhimanyu slew all those mighty Princes, including Prince Satvasravas and hundreds of warriors, invoking the celestial Gandharva weapon. Duryodhana felt tremor in his spine witnessing the prowess of Abhimanyu and rushed against Abhimanyu. In few moments, Duryodhana, though he is mighty, unable to respond to the prowess of Abhimanyu, commanded his charioteer to turn back and join Dronacharya, desire of his life.
Meanwhile, the continuous efforts of King Yudhistra and his army in entering the Vyuha were interrupted by King Jayadratha. King Vrihadvala, King Saguni, Krpacharya, Kritavarman and Lakshmana proceeded against Abhimanyu who was routing the entire Kaurava army like a kid playing with his toy.  Drenching every one of them with his darts, the valiant Abhimanyu vanquished them and made them turn back. Duryodhana’s son, Lakshmana who encountered Abhimanyu lost his head to Abhimanyu’s broad headed arrow and fell lifeless on the ground. Witnessing Lakshmana lying dead, the Kaurava troops were filled with fear and panic while raged Duryodhana yelled – “Kill him, right now!”
The bold and daring Abhimanyu!

On the command of Duryodhana, the Kalinga and the Nishadha army surrounded Abhimanyu under their King, Son of Kratha.  Crushing the legion in front of him like crushing a grape, Abhimanyu destroyed the entire elephant division of the Kalinga and the Nishadha Kingdom and ceasing not, without any struggle, he beheaded the son of Kratha. Not taking time to rejoice at his feet and slaying Vrindharaka, Abhimanyu rushed against the approaching Aswathama. Pierced by Aswathama’s shafts, standing tough and courageous, Abhimanyu responded to Aswathama’s darts and pierced him with three shafts in the chest. Desirous of rescuing him, Dronacharya, Krpacharya, King Vrihadvala and Kritavarman engaged in showering darts at Abhimanyu. Responding to everyone’s shafts and piercing them in return, Abhimanyu, with rage, slayed the Kosala King, King Vrihadvala by hurling a pointy dart at his chest, not before slaying his steeds and charioteer. With the fall of King Vrihadvala, the last Kosala King of Iksvahu dynasty was annihilated. Witnessing Abhimanyu’s feet, ten thousand warriors and their Kings fled from the battlefield in fear.
Meanwhile, returning to the battlefield, Karna began to resist Abhimanyu who was engaged in slaying thousands of Kaurava warriors. Responding to Karna’s shafts, Abhimanyu slaughtered six generals of Karna, Magadha Prince Ashwaketu and the Bhoja Prince Martikavata along with their steeds and charioteer. Ceasing not, desirous of victory for King Yudhistra, Abhimanyu slaughtered Satrunjaya, Chandraketu, Mahamegba, Uvarcha, and Suryabhasa. Beholding Abhimanyu, terrified Duryodhana requested Karna to discuss with Dronacharya about the means to slay him.

Rushing to Dronacharya, Karna asked – “Abhimanyu is crushing the whole army and the warriors are terrified. Is there any possible way to vanquish or slay Abhimanyu?”
Not taking his elated eyes from Abhimanyu, Dronacharya spoke proudly –“Observe him, Karna. Observe all his moves and swiftness in action. As a foremost warrior of this world and well versed in skills in archery and battling techniques, tell me whether you are able to witness any flaw in him? He has amused me with his looks, his action, his pace and the manner he has worn that defensive thick and impenetrable armor. He reminds me of Arjuna and Krishna in everything he does and in the manner he behaves.”
Smiling and feeling proud of Abhimanyu and his feat for a moment, remembering his duty to Duryodhana, Karna responded – “Just Sixteen and yet he surpasses Arjuna and me in his swiftness and skill. His arrows pierced me stronger than Arjuna’s. But, for Duryodhana’s victory, we need to find a way to stop Abhimanyu before he exterminates the whole army.”
On hearing the name of Duryodhana, Dronacharya’s smile and joy disappeared from his heart and face. Lowering his head, with a heavy heart, Dronacharya said – “No warrior is strong when he is left without a weapon and a skilled charioteer. Abhimanyu is invincible when he is with his bow or any weapon. And his charioteer Sumitra too is steering the steeds astonishingly. If you are able to cut of his bow and ground his chariot, hope, you can… slow him or resist him.”
Desire of restoring his fame and in order to revenge Abhimanyu for the insult, Duryodhana commanded – “There is no way we can slay him if we fight in this manner. Attack him! This is no time to follow the rules of the battle!” Commanded for an unfair battle, the mighty foremost warriors, Dronacharya, Aswathama, Karna, Duryodhana, Durmashana (Son of Duchadhana), Duchadhana, King Saguni, Krpacharya and Kritavarman attacked Abhimanyu simultaneously.  Responding to all those shafts with the same fierce and rage, Abhimanyu though pierced by darts, felt no pain. Beholding Abhimanyu’s prowess, his charioteer, remembering Abhimanyu’s words, “The whole of Kaurava army in front of me not even matches to one sixteenth of my power!”- felt proud and privileged, though accepting in his heart that his end is near.

In the most unrighteous battle, Karna broke the bow of Abhimanyu and Kritavarman slew the steeds. While others resisted Abhimanyu from taking another bow or weapon, Krpacharya slaughtered charioteer Sumitra. Jumping from his chariot with a sword and shield in hand, Abhimanyu, without any second thought, rushed towards Dronacharya.  Disheartened Dronacharya, remembering his duty as the generalissimo of the army, broke the shield of Abhimanyu with his darts as Karna cut off the sword into pieces.
Ceasing not and pacing forward, Abhimanyu rushed against Drona, picking a detached wheel lying on the ground. Beholding Abhimanyu holding a wheel, he reminded of Krishna raging with a wheel in his hand against Pithamaha Bhishma. As Dronacharya stood speechless and motionless witnessing Abhimanyu and seeing Krishna within him, other warriors broke the wheel into pieces with their darts. Shouting aloud in rage and picking up a mace from the ground, Abhimanyu rushed towards Aswathama’s chariot. With no time to respond, Aswathama quickly jumped from his chariot while Abhimanyu was engaged in slaying the steeds and the charioteer. Crushing the chariot with his mace, raged Abhimanyu, not exhausted or dejected or concerned about his life, rushed against the Gandhara warriors nearby.  With mace in his hand, he slew King Kalikeya (son of Suvala) and 77 Gandhara warriors. Standing strong and drenched in blood, Abhimanyu slew ten Brahma-Vasatiya chariot warriors and ten elephant warriors, along with their elephants.
Rushing towards Durmashana’s chariot, Abhimanyu crushed it into pieces and slew the steeds. With maces in their hand, both of them rushed against each other. Gathering up all his strength, Abhimanyu, mangled with arrows, struck Durmashana with his mace and as a result of the blow, both on them fell on the ground. Getting up first and realizing that Abhimanyu is struggling to stand, Durmashana struck hard with his mace, at the back of Abhimanyu’s head. Beholding Abhimanyu, the sons of Pandu warned, advised and begged Duryodhana to stop the sinful and vile act. King Yudhistra begged Dronacharya and Karna to stop the injustice.
With mace in his hand and gathering up all his strength for one last time, taking the blow in his head, Abhimanyu hits Durmashana in the crown part of his head. Unable to take the blow and with skull crushed, Durmashana fell lifeless on the ground. Weary as a result of the whole day’s battle and stupefied at the blow in his head, the incomparable Abhimanyu fell on the earth. Descending from their chariot, raged on the death of Durmashana, Duryodhana and Duchadhana proceeded towards Abhimanyu.
Standing near Abhimanyu, realizing that the time for the unsurpassed hero is near, Duchadhana kicked him in the back and laughed at Abhimanyu, who was breathing his last breath. Deeply insulted on the act of Duchadhana, Abhimanyu spoke in a low tone – “Uncle Duchadhana has insulted me and the Kuru family. No Kshatriya or a warrior would kick their foe, especially the one who is unarmed and lying defenseless. I did not expect such an ill-mannered act from the Kuru family.”

Duryodhana and Duchadhana stood laughing, enjoying their victory; Abhimanyu breathed his last breath as the sun set behind the mountain. Entering the battlefield by sunrise and fighting against seven Akshauhinis and slaying ten thousand warriors battling all day long till sunset and achieving a meritorious feat by battling against the mighty foremost warriors in an unfair battle, Abhimanyu died in the most glorious way as a Kshatriya, which even Pithamaha Bhishma was unable to accomplish.
With the death of Abhimanyu, the Kaurava soldiers cheered in delight and relief and retired to their tents filled with joy while Dronacharya and Karna stood with their heads lowered. Dejected and embarrassed for their act against the heroic Abhimanyu, they left the battlefield with a heavy heart.
