 இனியது என்று வைத்தேனோ சபரியைப் போலே

மதங்க முனிவரின் காலத்தில், சபரி என்ற வேடுவ குல பெண் காட்டில் வாழ்ந்து வந்தார் (வேடர்களில் தேன், அரக்கு போன்ற பொருட்களைச் சேகரித்து விற்கும் பிரிவினரைச் சபரர் என்பர்). சிறு வயது முதலே சிறந்த பக்தியும் குணமும் நிறைந்த சபரி, மதங்க முனிவரின் போதனையால் அவருக்கு சிஷ்யையாக அவரது ஆஷ்ரமத்தில் சேர்ந்தார். நாட்கள் செல்ல செல்ல, சபரியைத் தமது முதன்மை சிஷ்யையாக அங்கீகரித்தார் மதங்கர். ஆஷ்ரமத்தில் அவருக்கும், அவரது சிஷ்யர்களுக்கும் பணிவிடைகள் செய்து வந்தார் சபரி.

காலங்கள் சென்றன. மதங்கர் யோகநெறியில் முக்தியடைய முற்பட்டார். அதற்குரிய சமாதி நிலையில் அமர்ந்தார். மதங்கர் இல்லா உலகம் தனக்கும் வேண்டாம். எனவே தன்னையும் அழைத்து செல்லுமாறு சபரி வேண்டினார்.  மதங்கர், சபரியிடம் -“இன்னும் சில காலங்களில், ஸ்ரீ இராமனும் லக்ஷ்மணனும் இவ்வழியே வருவர். அவர்களை தகுந்த முறையில் உபசரி. ராம தரிசனம் பெற்ற பிறகு மோட்சத்திற்குச் செல்வாய்.”, என்றார். சபரியை, ஸ்ரீ ராமர் வரும்வரை, தமது ஆசிரமத்தில் இருந்து ராமநாமம் கூறி தவமியற்ற அறிவுறுத்திய மதங்கர், முக்தி நிலை எய்தினார்.

வருடங்கள் பல சென்றன. எந்த எதிர்பார்ப்பும் இன்றி, குருவின் வார்த்தைக்கு மதிப்பளித்து, அவரது வாக்கில் பூரண நம்பிக்கை வைத்து காலம் செல்வதைப் பற்றி துளியும் சிந்திக்காமல் குரு உபதேசித்த ‘ராம’ மந்திரத்தை வாழ்நாள் முழுவதும் ஓதிக்கொண்டிருந்தார். சபரி தனது குருநாதரின் கட்டளைப்படி தவவாழ்க்கை மேற்கொண்டு ஸ்ரீ இராமனின் வரவை எதிர்ப்பார்த்து காத்திருந்தார். ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் ராமனின் வருகையை எதிர்பார்த்திருந்த முதியவரான சபரி, அனுதினமும் காலை, தனது கைத்தடியுடன் ஆஷ்ரமம் நீங்கி, காட்டினுள்ளே சென்று, கனிகளைப் பறித்து வருவார். அவற்றைக் கடித்துச் சுவைத்துப் பார்ப்பார். இனிய சுவையுடைய கனிகளை மட்டும் ராமனுக்கு என்று தனியே எடுத்து வைப்பார். தனது கூடை நிரம்பியவுடன், ஆஷ்ரமம் சேர்ந்து, ஸ்ரீ இராமனின் வருகைக்காக வாசலில் அமர்ந்து விடுவார்.

வனவாசத்தின் போது சீதாதேவியை இராவணன் கடத்திக்கொண்டு செல்ல, இராமனும் இலக்குமணனும் தேவியைத் தேடி அலைந்து களைப்பில், சபரியின் ஆசிரமத்தை வந்தடைந்தனர். மதங்கர் கூறியிருந்தபடி, ராமர் வந்ததைக் கண்டு சபரி பூரிப்படைகிறார் சபரி. மதங்காஸ்ரமத்திற்குள் ஸ்ரீ ராமனையும் லக்ஷ்மணனையும் அழைத்தார். அன்புடனும் பண்புடனும் உபசரித்தார். சபரியால் கடித்துச் சுவைத்துப் பார்த்து, தனக்கென்று வைத்திருந்த இனிய கனிகளை ராமர் உண்டு மகிழ்ந்தார். லக்ஷ்மணனுக்கும் கொடுத்தார். ராம தரிசனத்தின் பயனாக மோட்சம் எய்தினார் சபரி.

சபரி, ஸ்ரீராமனிடம் தனக்கு ‘முக்தி’ கொடு என்று கேட்கவில்லை. ஸ்ரீராமனும் சபரிக்கு ஏதும் வரம் அளிக்கவில்லை. சபரி, ஸ்ரீராமன் அவதரிக்கும் முன்னரே குருவின் உபதசேம் பெற்று ஸ்ரீராம நாமத்தை உச்சரித்து, தன் வாழ்நாளையே ராமநாமத்திற்காக அர்ப்பணித்தார்.  ‘ராம நாமம்’ ஒன்று போதும், எதையும் பெற்றுத் தந்துவிடும் என்று உலகிற்கு உணர்த்துகிறார் சபரி. 

திருக்கோளூர் அம்மாள், “சபரியைப் போல் இனிய பழங்களை மட்டுமே பெருமாளுக்கு ஈந்தேனோ?”, என்கிறார்.

In the ashram of Sage Mathanga, at the foot of the Mountain Rishyamukha, lived an elderly woman called Shabari, who belonged to the hunter tribe. She accepted Sage Mathanga as her Guru and served him and his disciples. When her guru was about to attain moksha and reach for the higher worlds, she too wanted to join him. However, Sage Mathanga told her "Sri Rama and Lakshmana will be coming to this area in the future. Wait for them. You should serve and worship them and by their grace you can reach us". Saying so, Sage Mathanga sitting in lotus posture attains Mahasamadhi.

Obeying her acharya's words, Shabari stayed back and waited for the arrival of Rama and Lakshmana. Everyday Shabari would go out of her ashram, with the help of a walking stick and pluck berry fruits for Lord Ram. She would pluck a fruit, first taste it, and if it was sweet she would put it in her basket and discard the bitter ones. She wanted to give only the good and sweet fruits to Ram. Shabari collected the fruits, tasted them herself for sweetness, and kept only the good tasting ones for Rama. Then, she would return to the ashram and sit outside with the basket of fruits, waiting for Lord Rama and Lakshmana.

In their exile, while Sita was abducted by Ravana, Lord Rama and Lakshmana went in search for her. On their way, Rama and Lakshmana came to the ashram of Sage Mathanga and met Shabari there. Seeing two people walking towards the ashram, Shabari realized that they are indeed Lord Rama and Lakshmana and welcomed them happily. She invited them into her hut and offered them the fruits that she had gathered and kept.

When she offered them some wild fruits, the ones she first tasted to find which one tastes sweet and good to serve, Lord Rama was pleased very much at her devotion, service and love for him. As a result, she lost her sins and attained the fruits of her acharya bhakti.
