 இக்கரைக்கே சென்றேனோ விபீஷணனைப் போலே

விபீஷணன் - ராவணனின் இளைய சகோதரன்.   அரக்கர்களுக்கே உரிய தீய குணங்கள் கொண்ட சகோதர சகோதரிகளிடைய வளர்ந்தாலும் விபீஷணனின் குறிக்கோள் நேர்மை, தர்மம், நீதி. விபீஷணன் ஒற்றைக் காலில் நின்றபடி ஐயாயிரம் வருடங்கள் கடுந்தவம் புரிந்து கடவுளர்களை திருவுளங்கொள்ள வைத்ததால் பிரம்மன் அவனுக்கு மரணமில்லா பெருவாழ்வை வரமாக வழங்கினார்.

ராவணன் சீதையைக் கவர்ந்து வந்த போது கண்டித்தான். பிராட்டியை ராமனிடம் ஒப்படைத்து விட்டு உயிர் பிழைத்துக் கொள்ளுமாறு ராவணனை வலியுறுத்தினான். விபீஷணன் ராவணனின் ஒவ்வொரு கொடிய செய்கையையும் எதிர்த்தான். அவனுடைய அறிவுரைகளை ராவணன் ஏற்கவில்லை.

சீதாதேவி இலங்கையில் சிறைப்பிடிக்கப் பட்டிருப்பதை ஹனுமார் கண்டு வந்த பின், ஸ்ரீ இராமனும் அவருடைய வானரப் படையும் இலங்கை நோக்கி பாலம் அமைக்க, இராவணன் இச்செய்தி கேட்டு அவசரமாக அமைச்சரவையைக் கூட்டினான். அப்பொழுது, அவனது மந்திரிமார்களும் படைத் தளபதிகளும் இராவணனின் வீரத்தையும், இந்தரஜித்தின் போர்த்திறனையும், தங்களின் வீரத்தைப் பற்றியும் பெருமையாக கூறி, வானரங்களுக்கு எதிராக போரிடுவதே தங்களுக்கு இழுக்கு என்று மார் தட்டிக் கொண்டிருக்க, விபீஷணனோ, “ஸ்ரீ இராமனின் பலத்தையும், எதிரிகளின் போர்த்திறனையும் அறியாமல் பேசுவது தவறு. அவர்களின் பக்கம் தர்மம் உள்ளது. தவறு நம் பக்கம் உள்ளது. எனவே, சீதாதேவியை அவர்களிடம் ஒப்படைத்து மன்னிப்புக் கோரினால் ஸ்ரீ இராமன் நிச்சயம் மனமிறங்கி மன்னித்துவிடுவார். வீணாக யாரும் உயிர் இழக்க வேண்டாம். எனவே சீதாதேவியிடம் மன்னிப்பு கோரி உயிர் வாழ்வது பற்றி யோசியுங்கள். இல்லையேல் போரில் மடிவீர்.”-என்றான்.

விபீஷணனின் வார்த்தைகள் இராவணனுக்கும் இந்தரஜித்துக்கும் கோபத்தை மூட்ட, விபீஷணனைக் கடிந்து பேசினர். ராவணன் தன்னைப் புண்படப் பேசியதும், சிறுவனாகிய இந்திரஜித்தைக் கொண்டு அவமானப்படச் செய்ததும் விபீஷணன் மனதை விட்டு அகலவில்லை.   உறவுகளை விட்டொழித்து, ஸ்ரீராமன் தான் உண்மையான உறவு என்று தீர்மானித்த விபீஷணன் நான்கு ஆதரவாளர்களுடன் ராமனைச் சரணடைய இலங்கை விட்டு இக்கரைக்கு வந்தான். ராமரிடம் தனது வரவை அறிவிக்கும்படி வானர வீரர்களிடம் வேண்டினான்.

விபீஷணனைத் தங்களுடன் சேர்த்துக் கொள்வது குறித்த ஆலோசனையை நடத்தினார் ராமர். சுக்ரீவனும் மற்ற வானர மந்திரிகளும் எதிர்த்த போதும், அனுமன் ஆராய்ந்து உரைத்த கருத்தின்படி விபீஷணனை தன்னிடம் வரப் பணித்தார் ராமர். ராமரின் திருவடிகளில் விபீஷணன் விழுந்து வணங்கி, சரணாகதி (அடைக்கலம்) வேண்டினான். ராமர் விபீஷணனை ஏற்றருளினார். ராமர் விபீஷணனுக்கு அடைக்கலம் கொடுத்த செயலை அபயப்பிரதானம் என்பர்.

திருக்கோளூர் அம்மாள், “ராமனிடம் அடைக்கலம் புகுந்த விபீஷணனைப் போல் தான் பகவானிடம் சரணாகதி அடைந்தேனா?”- என்று வினவுகிறார்.

Vibhishana is the younger brother of King Ravana, in the great Indian epic, The Ramayan. Though he was a Rakshas, he was noble and pure hearted. From his early childhood, he spent all his time meditating on the name of the Lord. Eventually, Brahma appeared and said he would offer him any boon he wanted. Vibhishana said that the only thing he ever wanted was to have his mind fixed at the feet of the Lord as pure as lotus leaves (charan kamal). He prayed that he should be given the strength by which he would always be at the feet of the Lord and that he would receive the darshan (holy sight) of Lord Vishnu. This prayer was fulfilled and he was able to give up all his wealth and family, and join Sri Rama, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu.

In Ramayan, after Hanuman discovered the presence of Sita in Lanka, Rama came to the shores of Lanka, crossing the ocean with a huge monkey army under the guidance of Sugriva. Hearing this, King Ravana called for a meeting in his court and discussed the situation. His ministers and army leaders told him that their army would easily defeat the army of Rama and Sugriva.

The only one in the meeting who objected was Ravana's brother Vibhishana. He said "It is not smart to judge another army without fully judging its potential. From the time Sita was kidnapped and brought here, we have been seeing many inauspicious signs. Sita is a great pativrata. Rama and Lakshmana are incomparable warriors. Instead of battling, it is better if we return Sita to Rama and discuss peace. That's our only path to survival. I am saying this because of my interest in what is best for our clan."

Ravana and Indrajit were not pleased with Vibhishana’s talk.  When Vibhishana insisted again, Ravana got angry and asked him to leave Lanka. Vibhishana left Lanka along with four of his close friends to where Sri Rama and His army were camped.

There, he surrendered at Rama's divine feet. Initially, Sugriva and others objected to accepting Vibhishana. Rama, who does not distinguish his followers based on birth or circumstances in life, accepted Vibhishana, who fell at His feet and said "I have given up all my prior attachments. My life is now entirely in Your hands."

Thirukkolur Ammal is asking "Did I leave everything on this side and go to where the Lord is, like Vibhishana?"
