துறை வேறு செய்தேனோ பகவரைப் போலே

சிதம்பரம் அருகே உள்ள திருவஹீந்திரபுரத்தில் வில்லிபுத்தூர் பகவர் என்பவர் வசித்து வந்தார். பகவர் அந்தணரோ சந்நியாசியோ அல்ல. ஆனாலும் ஆற்றில் குளிக்கச் செல்லும் போது, எப்போதும் மற்றவர்கள் குளிக்கும் துறையை விட்டுவிட்டு வேறு துறைக்குச் சென்று தான் குளிப்பார். ஒருமுறை அந்தணர்கள் அவரிடம், “நீங்கள் ஏன் நாங்கள் குளிக்கும் துறையில் குளிப்பதில்லை?" என்று கேட்டனர்.

பகவர், "நான் வைஷ்ணவன். ராமானுஜரைப் பின்பற்றுபவன். நாங்கள் நித்ய அனுஷ்டானத்தை ஸ்ரீமன் நாராயணனுக்குச் செய்கிறோம். ஆனால், நீங்கள் வர்ணாஸ்ரமத்தைப் பின் பற்றுபவர்கள். இவை இரண்டும் ஒன்று சேராது. ஆகவேதான் நான் வேறு துறைக்கு செல்கிறேன்." என்றார்.

திருக்கோளூர் அம்மாள், “பகவரைப்போல் வைணவ நம்பிக்கையில் வேறு துறை செய்தேனோ?”, என்று வினவுகிறார்.

In Thiruvanthipuram, near Chidhambaram, once there lived a Srivaishnava called Villiputhur Bagavar. Bagavar was neither a Brahmin who understood the true nature of the soul or was a saint but he followed Swami Ramanuja’s practices and was an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu. As performing Sandhyavandanam and other karmas either on the river banks or in small ponds is considered superior, Bagavar too will go to the banks of the river.

But, whenever he goes to the river to perform his daily anushatanam, he would always go to a different part of the river and not to the place where most of the Brahmins would go. One day the confused Brahmins enquired Villiputhurar as to why he is not joining them in doing sandhyavandanam.

Bagavar replied "We are followers of Swami Ramanuja. We perform these nityanushatanam only as a service to Sriman Narayana. We do not expect anything in return. You are brahmins who follow Varnashrama Dharma. You perform the nityanushtanams as part of your varna (varna i.e., only because you all are Brahmin). Therefore, the two of us cannot mix".

Thirukkolur Ammal is asking "Did I understand the greatness of service and separate myself from others?"
