அஹம் வேத்மி என்றேனோ விசுவாமித்ரரைப் போலே

கௌசிகன் என்னும் மன்னன், பிரம்மரிஷி வசிட்டரோடு ஏற்பட்ட போட்டியின் காரணமாக, கடுமையான தவங்களைச் செய்து தானும் பிரம்ம ரிஷியானார். அவரே விசுவாமித்திரர்! காயத்ரி மந்தரம் உட்பட பழமையான ரிக் வேதத்தின் பல பகுதிகளை இவர் எழுதியதாக கருதப்படுகிறது. 

இராமவதாரத்தில், ஒரு நாள், தசரத சக்கரவர்த்தியின் அரண்மனைக்கு வந்த விசுவாமித்ரர் - "தசரத சக்ரவர்த்தியே! என் சித்தாஸ்ரமத்தில் வசிக்கும் முனிவர்கள் அசுரர்களின் துன்பத்திற்கு ஆளாகின்றனர். சித்தாஸ்ரமத்தில் நடைபெறவுள்ள யாகத்துக்கு ஆறுநாட்கள் காவலாக உன் புதல்வன், ஸ்ரீ ராமனை அழைத்துச் செல்ல விரும்புகிறேன். இராமன் எங்களுக்கு பாதுகாப்பு அரணாகவும், அசுரர்களின் கொட்டத்தை அடக்கவும் உதவியாய் இருப்பான்.", என்றார்.

அசுரர்களுக்கு எதிராக தன் புதல்வனை அனுப்ப தயங்கிய மன்னன், இராமன் இன்னும் இளைஞன் என்றும், அதற்கு பதிலாக, தாமே தம் பெரும் சேனையுடன் வந்து பாதுகாப்பு அளிப்பதாகவும் வேண்டினார். மன்னரின் வார்த்தைகளைக் கேட்ட முனிவர், "தசரத சக்ரவர்த்தியே! எம் வார்த்தைகளில் நம்பிக்கை கொள். உம் புதல்வன் யார் என்பதும், அவனது வீரத்தின் மதிப்பு என்ன என்பதும் வசிஷ்டர் மற்றும் என் போன்ற பிரம்மரிஷிகளுக்கே  நன்கு தெரியும். வேதம் கற்றோர்க்கு மட்டுமே உம் புதல்வனின் பலமும் குணமும் தெரியும். தயங்காமல் உம் புதல்வனை அனுப்பு. அவனின் வீரத்தினை உலகம் அறிய வேண்டிய நேரம் இது.", என்று கூறினார்.

                   "அஹம்வேத்மி மஹாத்மானம் ராமம் ஸ்த்யராக்ரமம் வஷிஷ்டோபி
                     மஹாதேஜா யே சேமே தபஸிஸ்திதா"

நான் ராமனை மஹாத்மா என உண்மையில் அறிகிறேன். மஹாதேஜஸ்வியான விஷிஷ்டரும் கூட இதை அறிவார். அனைவரும் இதை அறிவார்கள்!

 மன்னனும், முனிவரின் வார்த்தையில் உள்ள உண்மையினை உணர்ந்து, நம்பிக்கையுடன் ஸ்ரீ ராமனையும், இராமனை விட்டு என்றும் நீங்காத இலட்சுமணனையும் முனிவருடன் வழியனுப்பி வைத்தார்.

           திருக்கோளூர் அம்மாள், "பிரம்மரிஷி விசுவாமித்ரரைப் போல் உண்மை அறிந்து, அதை நம்பிக்கையுடன் கூற என்னால் இயலுமா?", என்று வினவுகிறார்.

Brahmarshi Vishvamitra is one of the most venerated sages of ancient India. He is credited as the author of most of  Mandala 3 of the Rigveda, including Gayatri Mantra. The Puranas mention that only 24 rishis since antiquity have understood the whole meaning of—and thus wielded the whole power of—Gayatri Mantra. Vishvamitra is supposed to be the first!

Vishvamitra was a king in ancient India, called by the name, Kaushika. An enraged King Kaushika once had a fight against Brahmarishi Vasishta and looking at the powers of the Brahmarishi, Vishvamitra too performed tapasya for several years to please Shiva. Even after getting the grace of Lord Shiva, Vishvamitra lost his battle against brahmarishi Vasishta. This incident made a deep impression on the King. He realized that power obtained by penances is far greater than mere physical might. He renounced his kingdom and began his quest to become a greater rishi than Vashista. He took on the name Vishvamitra.

During the era of Ramayan, one day, Vishvamitra came to king Dasaratha's court. The king received him with great honor. The sage then asked Dasaratha to give him Sri Rama so that He can defend the 6 days of yaga which is to be conducted in his ashram by the great sages and maharishis, from the rakshasas who were disturbing it.

The king, who is really fond of Sri Rama than everyone else replied with a concerned heart that Rama is very young and instead, the King himself would come along with a vast army and defend the Yaga and slay the rakshasas!

Vishvamitra replied: "O King! I know Sri Rama. He is capable of defeating the rakshasas. Only people like me and Vasishta truly know who He is. Understand that my words are nothing but the truth."

“aham vedmi mahAtmAnam rAmam satya parAkramam

 vasishTopi mahAtejA ye cheme tapasistithA:”

Vasishta agreed with Vishvamitra and asked the king to send Rama and Lakshmana along with Vishvamitra. The king agreed and the two princes went with the sage and helped protect his yaga against the likes of Tataka and Maricha.
