 அடையாளம் சொன்னேனோ கபந்தனைப் போலே

தேவலோக கந்தர்வ இன மன்னனின் மகனாய் தனு என்னும் பெயர் கொண்டு, கந்தர்வ இனத்திற்கே உரிய இளமையும் அழகும் நிறைந்து பிறந்தவன் கபந்தன். வேண்டிய உருவம் எடுக்கத்தக்க கந்தர்வனாகிய கபந்தன், கர்வங்கொண்டு அனுதினமும் உருமாறி முனிவர்களையும், மக்களையும் பயமுறுத்தியும் துன்புறுத்தியும் இன்பம் கண்டான். அனைவரையும் மரியாதை குறைவாகவே அனைவரையும் நடத்தினான். ஒரு நாள், முனிவர் ஸ்தூலசிரஸ் என்பவரின் கோபத்தால், மிகவும் பெருத்த உடலை சாபமாக பெற்றான்.

அரக்கனைப் போல் உடல் பெற்ற போதும் திருந்தாமல், பிரம்மனை நோக்கி தவமிருந்து, நீண்ட ஆயுளையும் பெற்று, பலமும் ஆயுளும் உள்ள திமிரால், தேவேந்திரனுடன் போர் செய்தான். கோபங்கொண்ட தேவேந்திரன், தன் வஜ்ராயுதத்தால் அவன் தலையை தட்டி மார்பினுள் அழுத்தினான்.

தன் தவறை உணர்ந்து மன்றாடிய கபந்தனிடம், தேவேந்திரன் - "உனக்கு இரண்டு நீண்ட கைகளும், வயிற்றுப் பகுதியில் நீண்ட பல்லும், ஒரு சிவந்த கண்ணும் இருக்கும். ஸ்ரீமன் நாராயணன், இராமவதாரத்தில், ராமனாய் அவதரித்து, தன் தம்பி லக்ஷ்மணனுடன் வரும் பொழுது உன்னுடன் போரிட்டு உன் கைகளை கொய்வார். உன் உடலை அவர்கள் எரியூட்ட, உன் சாபம் விலகும். நீயும் உன் கந்தர்வ உடலினைப் பெறுவாய். அது வரை நீ வனத்தில் கையில் கிடைப்பதை உண்டு வாழ்வாயாக!"- என்றான்.

ஆண்டுகள் பல சென்றன. தேவேந்திரன் கூறியது போல், ஸ்ரீமன் நாராயணன் ஸ்ரீ ராமனாய் பூமியில் அவதரித்தார். வனவாசத்தின் போது இலங்கையின் மன்னன், இராவணன், சீதையை கடத்திக் கொண்டு செல்ல, சீதாதேவியை தேடி ராமனும் லக்ஷ்மணனும் தண்டகாரண்யத்தினுள்  வரும் பொழுது, கபந்தனின் கையில் சிக்கினர். அவர்களை யார் என்று அறியாமல் கபந்தன் அவர்களை உண்ண எத்தனிக்க, தங்களின் அம்பு கொண்டு அக்கைகளை வெட்டி, ஸ்ரீ இராமனும் லக்ஷ்மணனும் தங்களை விடுவித்துக் கொண்டனர். கைகள் இழந்த கபந்தன், தன் உடலை எரியூட்டுமாறு வேண்ட, ஸ்ரீ இராமனும் லக்ஷ்மணனும் அவ்வாறே செய்ய, சாபம் நீங்கி உண்மை நிலை பெற்றான்.

உருமாறிய கபந்தன், ஸ்ரீ இராமனிடம் - "ரிஷியமுக பர்வதத்தில் சுக்ரீவன் தங்கியுள்ளான். அவனும், அவன் உடன் இருக்கும் சகாக்களும் தாங்கள் சீதாதேவியை மீட்க உதவி புரிவர். அவன் நட்பு உங்களுக்கு உறுதுணையாய் இருக்கும்."- என்று கூறி, சுக்ரீவனின் அங்க அடையாளங்களை கூறி, ரிஷியமுக பர்வதத்திற்கு செல்லும் வழியையும் காட்டி, ஸ்வர்கலோகம் சென்றான்.

     திருக்கோளூர் அம்மாள், "கபந்தனைப் போல் பகவானுக்கு நான் ஏதும் உதவி புரிந்தேனா?", என்று வினவுகிறார்.

Kabhandha was a Gandharva Prince, whose real name was Vishvavasu and was very handsome. Being a prince and mischievous kid from his childhood, he used to take fearful forms and scare and harass humans and saints. One day, while having fun in the same way with the saints passing by, raged at the disrespect from Vishvavasu, Rishi Sthulashiras cursed by him to have a very large body.

Worried, he performed a severe penance towards Brahma and was blessed with a long life. Being more powerful than ever and with a huge body, the egoistic and arrogant Vishvavasu went to Devalok and battled against Indra. Indra hit him with his Vajrayuda and pushed his thighs into his stomach and his head into his chest. Because he was blessed by Brahma with a long life, Indra could not kill him. Instead he gave Kabandha two long arms, a mouth with large canine teeth in his stomach and a single burning red eye.

Realising the mistake he has done, Vishvavasu begged for forgiveness from Indra. Indra told him that Lord Sriman Narayan will be born on earth as Sri Rama. When he meets Sri Rama and Lakshmana, in Krauncharanya forest, in a fight, they will cut his arms off and cremate him and by then his curse would be lifted and he would be a Gandharva again.

Kabandha then lived in Krauncharanya forest. He stayed in one place and would catch anything that got within his arms reach and eat it. After Ravana carried away Sita, Sri Rama and Lakshmana came through Krauncharanya following the traces, looking for Sita. Kabandha caught them with his long hands and tried to eat them. When they cut off his hands, he realized that they were Rama and Lakshmana and asked them to burn his body. When they did that, he regained his original form.

He then told them the following: "Cross River Pampa and reach Rishyamukha. Sugreeva, who is the son of Surya, is currently living in the Rishyamukha Mountain, after having been chased away by his brother Vali. You will meet Hanuman. He is one with good qualities and will help you in your search for Sita. Accept his friendship and through his help you can slay Ravana and get back Piratti."

He then told Rama and Lakshmana how to reach and identify Sugreeva and went to heaven.
