நீரோருகம் கொண்டேனோ காசிசிங்கனைப் போலே

நீரோருகம் என்பது தாமரை மலரைக் குறிக்கும்.

புனித ஸ்தலமான காசியில், சிங்கன் என்பவன் வசித்து வந்தான். ஸ்ரீமன் நாராயணனின் தீவிர பக்தனான அவன், அனுதினமும் குளத்திலிருந்து தாமரை மலரை, தானே பறித்து, எம்பெருமானை அலங்கரித்து, வணங்குவான். சிறந்த நீச்சல் வீரனான சிங்கனின் நீச்சல் திறமை, நாளுக்கு நாள் வளர, விளைவாக, அவனுள் அகந்தையும் மலர்ந்தது.

கங்கை நதியின் ஒரு கரையிலிருந்து மற்றொரு கரைக்கு அநாசியமாக நீச்சல் அடிக்கும் அளவிற்கு, திறமையும் வளர்ந்தது. ஒருசமயம், சிங்கன் நீச்சல் அடிக்கையில், நதியின் சுழலில் சிக்கிக் கொண்டான். கங்கை அவனை அடித்துச் சென்றது. அவனது நீச்சல் திறமை கைகொடுக்காமல் போக, கொஞ்சம் கொஞ்சமாக நீரில் மூழ்கத் தொடங்கினான்.

தனது அகந்தையே தனது இந்நிலைமைக்கு காரணம் என்பதை உணர்ந்த சிங்கன், கூப்பிட்டக் குரலுக்கு ஓடி வந்து முதலையிடம் சிக்கிய கஜேந்திரனைக் காத்த நாராயணனின் நினைவு வர, "நாராயணா! முதலையிடம் சிக்கிய கஜேந்திரனைப் போல், அகந்தையில் சிக்கியுள்ள நானும் உன்னிடம் சரணாகதி அடைகிறேன். என்னை காப்பாற்று.”, என்று சரணாகதி அடைந்தான்.

காற்று பலமாக வீச, நதியில் ஒரு பெரிய அலை எழுந்து வந்து அவனை கரையில் சேர்த்தது. இறைவனின் அருள்தான் தன்னைக் காத்தது என அறிந்த அவன், அகந்தையை விட்டொழித்தான். அன்று முதல், அனுதினமும் ஸ்ரீமன் நாராயணனை மலர்களால் அலங்கரித்து, அகந்தையின்றி சேவைப்புரிந்து வாழ்ந்தான்.

திருக்கோளூர் அம்மாள், “காசிசிங்கனைப் போல தினமும் ஸ்ரீமன் நாராயணனை தாமரை மலர்கள் கொண்டு அலங்கரித்தேனா?”, என்று வினவுகிறார்.

nIrOrugam koNdEnO kAsi singanaip pOlE

“nIrOrugam” means Lotus flower.

In the city of Kasi, once, there lived a person called Singan. Being an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu, every day he would go to the ponds in the city and collect lotus flowers by himself and pray to the Lord with them.

He was a proficient swimmer. Swimming daily and collecting flowers from the ponds, his swimming skills got better and as a result, he developed an ego about his swimming ability and he claimed that he could even swim across the flooded Ganges. One day, when he was swimming across the Ganges, a quick flood came across and carried him away.

Having caught in the swirls of the flood, he realized that it was his egoism towards his skill that has brought him this far and he started praying to the Lord. He remembered the event of Lord Vishnu saving Gajendra, the elephant caught by a crocodile. He prayed, "O! Lord, You appeared in front of the elephant who sought refuge in You and saved it. Please save this poor soul too as well. I surrender to You completely".

While he was praying to the lord, a big tide picked up Singan and left him safely in the banks of the river. Realizing the work of the Lord who saved him, Singan prayed to Him with a changed and surrendered heart. He then continued to worship Lord Vishnu with lotus flowers, from that day on, without any ego.

Thirukkolur Ammal asks, "Did I pray to the Lord with lotus flowers every day like Kasi Singan?"
