உடம்பை வேறுத்தேனோ நறையூராரைப் போலே

பிள்ளை திருநறையூர் அரையர் எனும் வைஷ்ணவ ஆச்சார்யார், ஒரு சமயம், தனது மனைவி மற்றும் 6 பிள்ளைகளுடன், தொட்டியம் என்ற ஊரில் அமைந்துள்ள வேதநாராயணப் பெருமாளை தரிசிக்க சென்றார்.
அவர் கோவிலுக்குள் பெருமானை சேவித்துக் கொண்டிருந்த போது எதிர் பாராமல் கோவிலுக்குள் நெருப்பு பரவியது. தீ வேகமாகப் பரவ, மக்கள் அலறிக்கொண்டு கோவிலின் வெளியே ஓடினர்.

கருவறைக்குள் நெருப்பு பரவுவதைக் கண்ட அரையர், “எம்பெருமான் நெருப்பில் சிக்கிகொண்டாரே!”, என்று கூறி, சயன கோலத்தில் இருந்த விக்ரஹத்தை நெருப்பில் இருந்து பாதுகாக்க, எம்பெருமானை இறுக்க அனைத்துக் கொண்டார். அதை கண்ட அவர் மனைவி மற்றும் பிள்ளைகளும் எம்பெருமானை இறுக்க அனைத்துக்கொண்டனர்.

அவ்வெட்டு உயிர்களின் தியாகத்தினால், பெருமானின் திருமேனி எவ்வித பாதிப்பும் இன்றி காப்பாற்றப்பட்டது. அவர்களின் தியாகத்தில், அன்பில் நெகிழ்ந்த எம்பெருமான் அவர்களுக்கு மோக்ஷம் வழங்கினார்.

திருக்கோளூர் அம்மாள், “திருநறையூரார் போல், உடம்பை வெறுத்து எம்பெருமானை நான் காத்தேனா?” என்று வினவுகிறார்.

Pillai Thirunaraiyur Araiyar was a noble Srivaishnava acharya. He, along with his wife and 6 children, visited Thottiyam Vedanarayana Perumal temple. At that time, due to some accident, fire started spreading in the temple. Seeing the fire spreading, everyone ran away from the temple. Araiyar noticed the raging fire spreading towards the inner-most sanctum sanctorum (Girbhagriha).   In order to protect the main deity of the temple from the fire, he embraced the Lord. Seeing him, his family including his children too embraced the Lord and offered their bodies to protect the Lord. In the fire, they all lost their lives.

Pleased with their devotion, the Lord appeared before them and granted salvation to the entire family of the Araiyar. His devotion and love for the Lord is celebrated by Pillai Lokachariar in his Sri Vachana Bhushanam - "upEyaththukku iLaiya perumALaiyum periya udaiyAraiyum piLLai thirunaRaiyUr araiyaraiyum chinthayanthiyaiyum pOlE irukka vENdum".

Thirukkolur Ammal is asking "Did I let go of my body for the sake of the Lord like Pillai Thirunaraiyur Araiyar?"
